The fishing rod you get from Hatty by challenging him to a bug battle and beating him 4 times by selecting Fight, NOT practice. The grass gets cut as time passes, after a few days or so, maybe a week. I've no idea about walking through the caves, I've never found anything that can help with that. I just don't think you can.

walking through the caves requires that you collect 10 chickens for the old lady in the east side of town, beyond where the cow used to be.

after talking to the old lady the chickens are spread throughout the town, visit every place possible to collect them all then talk to the old lady again to get an item that make it possible to go into dark places (places where the main characters said that were too dark to venture into)

Where did you got the Catfish ? Was on every fishing spot multiple times and don´t get it :/

That secret fishing spot you get when you beat the Boss on the sled. Go there and wait until evening, when it goes all orange, and there will be two fish. The top big one gets another girl and the bottom one is the catfish. You can only get it at this time.
