Russian Base mission
So i used to play this game, along with the UFO:AS and UFO:AL ones when i was 11, but i had the game in English (i speak spanish) and back then i knew ♥♥♥♥ about nothing, so i strugled to play properly. Now I´m trying to beat UFO:AM´s campaign for once, but I found myself unable to beat that mission were you have to recolect the info of the Russian Base. It is full of aliens that do absurd AOE damage and there is just no way to beat it. Any recommendation?

My tactics (that worked after a few attempts): spread squad out about 4 or 5 'tiles' away from each other to limit those caught in AOE but close enough to focus fire aliens down. Also ignored the gate as it seemed to be a death trap: but blew a hole in the wall with a rocket/grenade combo with more grenades on hand.

Pausing to heal often in between combat and advancing forward.

Also saving often in case things go badly.

Well, Imma try your strategy, hope it works!
And what do you do once inside? Because i managed to get inside once (with 2 casualties already) and dealing with rocket launcher aliens behind every corner wasnt a fun thing, you know.

Once inside I used the pistol carrying troops as scouts/advance guard. The rocket launcher tended to find a long corridor to guard (if any rockets are left). Long range weaponry made up the middle formation. When inside the room that looks to be made up of lots of shelving that contains the goal, I paired off troops (with rocket being in a trio/solo) to go up the aisles.

Once item retrieved (most likely by a pistol scout). I group marched them all back to the exit point via the fastest/preplotted route.

Be prepared for pausing to heal on occasion. Focus firing is your friend in the close quarters..

Also Bio Armour is really helpful for this mission and beyond. Sun Armour was what I used, and as long as I healed up between encounters it worked for the squad.

Necroing this thread for future generations. Smoke bombs are your friend, they break line of sight and give you precious time to regroup/mind control/grenade the ♥♥♥♥ out of blind aliens. Just finished hard/ironman game with loosing only a single operative during the very first base defence mission. Also never run, unless you are trying to avoid projectiles, walk only. Your operatives are harder to spot when they walk and they are better at spotting enemies when they arent running. Use third game speed option if you think that game is too slow when operatives not running.

Personally my method of navigating that deathtrap was to just clear the outside, I highly prize stealth so I got a conga line of aliens coming out the gate after pre-positioning my team to avoid aoe's outside.

Inside is by far the greater deathtrap. SAVED and then attempted to find the least populated path through the base (they patrol -.-) with my 2 stealthiest guys while the rest of the team slept in the entrance. Only had to pop 5 aliens while walking all the way to the back room, grabbing the case, and bailing before the main swarm wandered into any of my guys. Took MANY attempts.

High stealth/observation + walking is definitely your friend. Also speed stat, gotta walk faster than the slow guy on the team runs. ^^
Doubly helpful when you start using heavy armor and weapons, since you CAN'T run then.

Oh, I remember this mission.

Part 1 - we use sniper rifles and microcontrol. While the bait runs or catches rockets, snipers shoot enemies.
Part 2 - the shotgun is our best friend=) The bigger the shotgun, the better friend it is=)
