How Pit People died?

I finally bought Pit People and I'm enjoying playing it all over again, but I primarily bought it for the multiplayer (besides giving my money to the great chicken).

I've seen many people complaining/explaining that Pit People died pretty quickly contrary to CC and BBT that altough don't have a current player it's understandable because they are "old" games.

Can anyone give me the story of how Pit People doesn't have a player base? The game seems perfect to have a competitive scene, and also Pit People was going to have workshop compatibility?

Workshop was discussed, and unless it hasn't been deleted, there should be a comment on these forums from a developer stating that they would add a Workshop after the game was finished.

However, nearing the end of the game's development things were quite clearly rushed to conclude. A small update was released afterwards and the game was abandoned after that. Behemoth has shown no interest in continued work on Pit People, and given the circumstances I can't blame them.
