Having nit played OG, you may not be expecting the latter, but I definitely suspect that is a lot of it.
Personally, I think the latter spoiler part is more of what this is with Rebirth's ending.
One thing that might help: when the OG came out, there was a fair bit of grumbling about what happened with Aerith, and a decent portion of the fanbase wanted it to be different. Look at it as a window into how things would play out if that fanbase got their wish.
When Aerith dies it happens so fast and you don't get a "dying in your arms" scene which games and movies really over play. She just keels over with her sword in her back and is dead. It's like real life. Death comes out of no where at times and when it does, there is no goodbyes. You're stuck with this feeling of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ they're actually really gone. I don't know how to explain it but I'm sure anyone who's experienced this know's what I'm talking about.
With her hanging around and not just instantly being gone, I dunno. I felt like it cheapened the whole scene. Remake and Rebirth does some good things but it really makes me like the OG more than I already did.
