Clearly I missed/forgot something [SPOILERS]
So I'm in Gongaga right now at the part where Yuffie wakes up Cloud because of the monster sound. They run up to the memorial on the hill and Cloud says "Gotta be a Weapon." When did the party learn about the weapons? I'm literally sitting here with the cutscene paused because I'm afraid I missed some random sidequest where they leamred about the weapons.

Isn't this the second encounter with a Weapon after the Corel reactor?
There was a “weapon” a few chapters earlier, did you forget about it ?

I'm not sure, that's why I'm asking XD

it's strange because that's not the final form of the weapons. I think they only serve as containers for the huge materia, and then in part 3, when all the weapons are activated, they will change shape and I think they will launch the huge materia in various parts of the game world.

Anyway, I could forgive this because, in the world of Gaia, it was a well-known legend that the Cetra created weapons that activated in times of crisis when the planet was in trouble. (In fact, I can't wait for part 3 since this was the part of the game where practically nothing happened; in the next one, there will be fire and flames).

So, even if the player doesn't know what the weapons are, the characters in the game world do. (For example, if you see Shinra, they realized immediately when the weapons activated.)

But what you said, in my opinion, is serious, is that later on, they will all talk about Meteor... when they still don't know anything about Jenova (aside from having seen her in the reactor and then at the Shinra headquarters) since this part comes only after they travel to the northern continent.
Anyway post closed. I'm a forgetful old ass man,

Jesus Christ, I love FF7 like no other game aside from MAYBE Chrono Trigger but very interesting definitely gonna look into the lore a little deeper now.

Yeah, but they didn't know what they were looking at, I don't think. Yuffie just saw big ass materia and thought, yeah, I can totally put that in my bag.

As for when they encountered the Weapons in the original, the first was Diamond Weapon. And the party didn't so much as encounter it as they did run up on its sizzling corpse after Shinra fired the huge cannon they pulled from Junon to Midgar.

As for these guys weapons, these supposedly are just babies, not the colossal Weapons from the original. We haven't gotten to that point in the story yet. They were still just a mention. But something needs to be able to battle all those dark whispers.

In OG, the party was there when all of the weapons in Northern Crater were released.

Several days later, they were in/around Junon when Saphire Weapon attacked. Shinra blasted its head off with Sister Ray.

Later, Diamond comes for Midgar, while it is readying Sister Ray to fire on NC, and the party fights Diamond and defeats it. Not sure how Canon this is, but it falls down. Then gets up and continues toward Midgar. Then it trades fire with Midgar and ultimately it falls, though blowing up the executive suite of Shinra Tower.

Edit: Ffs I hate typi.g on.phone.

OH, right right, thanks for the correction! I was writing it and was like "Wait, that... doesn't sound right" but couldn't think of it. Should have looked it up just to be sure. I mean, it's only been decades... XD

imo this is a Dropped ball

Red 13 should know them as "the guardians of the planet". according to the lore he knows of them.

simply calling it a "weapon" is kinda dumb af. only after the guardians get harvested for the materia and turned into the giant mecha should they become known as "weapons"

Red knows more about them via Hojo than the history he's learned at Cosmo Canyon, and Hojo definitely views them as weapons to be harnessed. Red would likely be more familiar with Hojo calling them weapons, given he's specifically researching them and things like them, than he would be with them as 'Guardians of the Planet' per any of the far more general and vague teachings at Cosmo Canyon.
