Tifa is great on normal, but on hard, anybody not using the genji gloves will be capped at 9999 damage, so Tifa's ability to ramp up stagger damage is far less useful.
Hard mode is all about spamming aga spells for both damage and generating pressure, which Cloud/Aerith/Yuffie do better than the rest of the cast. Which make them objectively the best party.
Though personally the subjective best party is the one you find most fun because you can clear the game using anybody really.
To call Aerith the strongest is an overstatement shes slow moving around the field and her ATB is slow to build. Shes the best assistant due to her wards being so useful. Once you cast those wards you should switch to another character immediately and focus dealing damage with someone capable of building ATB at a fast rate.
tifa is just there for the lovely eye candy
cloud is the third wheel we cant get rid of
Cloud, Yuffie and Barret or Cloud Tifa and Yuffie is way easier to play then using Aerith
Red is also good if you know how to use him
Aerith instead of Red for more sustain.
Cloud is kinda useless, in the original 7 he was able to become a dmg god.
7 > 7R
I think it would either be Yuffie Tifa Aerith, or Cloud Tifa Aerith depending on your play style.
Either way you are really leaving Aerith on the table which is a big mistake that you will be forced to deal with on the later stages of the VR battles. Her ability to make you Limits infinite, crazy multipliers on magnified spells, or even just her invincible against physical attacks move makes her somebody you will want in your party for the most difficult fights.
Yuffie might be a good AP battery but Aerith is a Limit break battery, and does a lot more.
