On PC seems they'll be Twitch Drops.

twitch was easy just put some random person i care not for on 1% volume then i played some windwaker while i waited for the rewards, now to finish my download am almost done

muted and minimized always works fine for me.

You can minimize and mute as much as you want, it literally doesn't matter for Twitch drops.
What does matter is that it sometimes won't count if you have more than one stream running, just like how channel points are only accumulated for two streams at once. I currently have some random stream with FFVII Rebirth at 160p in a muted background tab and the progress bar is going up in my drops inventory.

Source: I've been doing exactly this to claim Twitch drops for years and it's never not worked.

Did you have any troubles getting your drops? My Twitch and Steam accounts are linked and on Twitch it keeps saying connect under the Twitch drops which takes me to the SQ page with the instructions (https://ffvii-rebirth.twitch.rewards.square-enix.com/). Step 3 says to click "Click now" which I did and has been replaced with "Connect" ever since. From there the "Acquire product code" on the SQ website is greyed out so I can't get the code. Tried even connecting my Twitch and Steam accounts to my SQ account THEN going to the SQ link and it didn't work.

Same with me, says it's claimed but i don't have the item and it doesn't give me a code either

How are they accessed after you enter the Steam code? There was a window that popped up unexpectedly and I closed it accidentally before reading it.

Its a dumb design. I had the same issue.

The fix is to connect from both sides of the respective websites, because linking one side you would think means it is actually linked, but nope gotta do it from both ends.

Click Twitch Login. You probably have it connected and logged in on Twitch's side, and not SE side. The Acquire Product Code will then light up to click and show a code you can then copy and paste into Steam to activate.

I just had to launch the game and it notified me that new content had been downloaded, though I do think that line is a bit misleading as I am sure the code simply unlocks something that is already downloaded for everyone.

I remember trying to set up my FF14 account 10 years ago and had to go through one of the most convoluted process, I don't know why Square keep making the basics so complicated.
