The original game hardly counts as a "date", it's basically a meeting between bros, with Barrett questioning why Cloud didn't go for any of the girls. They don't even get to act out the stage play, and the romantic music doesn't play while they're on the gondola ride.

My guy it interaction based. You could date either aeris, tifa, yuffie, or barret based on how you interacted with them.
