FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH

Is this the return of the golden age FF style?
Even if the game isn't perfect because of the structure of the conventional game loop stuff like chadley, towers, chocobos. This is the first time i've feeling the golden age vibes again.
It did feel like a real final fantasy again. Discuss what the difference is

If you don't see this golden age final fantasy element, there's no need to participate.

You can't afford to shut out half the conversation or your topic is going to get buried by cheap controversy

im not one to really see it in a 'golden age' light cause my rose tinted glasses were never for final fantasy.

but i will say they def made a gameplay loop that is quite enjoyable, and a very interesting story to go along with it, so i have no real complaints.

i do hope they continue to use this modern from of the ATB system some more, it adds a lot of value to the game, for me.

This is sort of a return in terms of the visual style and how good some of the character interactions can be. It is not a return in terms of the former quality of the storytelling of an epic heroes adventure

I haven't engaged with a single player final fantasy like this since FF12, rebirth is fantastic.
I'm too old to believe in "golden ages", but gaming industry is definitely picking up the slack. ^^''
And yeah, this modern ATB system is really entertaining, really clever modernization of FF7's ATB system. ^^''

I think just in terms of the combat they should just stick to this hybrid system and standardize it for future FF's moving forward. A lot of people seem to really like it. The flow of combat is butter smooth and its a system that is unique to FF and built up using mechanics from past titles like stagger from FFXIII
If you want "golden age" FF there are companies out there like Mistwalker

Lost Odyssey has aged very well and its my headcanon that its the real XIII

I saw my bro play it a while back. I was VERY impressed. It really does have that FF feel.
Except, when you're expecting FF, and some things are different, like magic names, no summons, and other stuff, you're very likely to not see what IS there.

I desperately want to get back to Lost Odyssey, a family member stole my xbox and I never managed to get another one. Shame it's never seen a port.

Which jrpg did you like then?
I've played a lot of them too.

Honestly FF13's ATB system was already clever, but some design decisions really limited how much they were able to capitalize on it.

multiple ATB bars is from FF13 too.

I agree with this, but i have to also say, that the controls are a bit basic, and don't give me the freedom i want as an action player.

I don't like how you have to do a full roll before you can shoot those wind waves with cloud. Make that roll cancel immediately into wind waves so you don't even see the roll.

I want more attack options too. More skill slots. But those are small details that could be easily added on top of what they have now, so yeah.

I wonder if it could be expanded with FF12 gambits. I think they already experimented with it, looking at the chad-bot sidequest.

Apparently it runs on emulators. If you can't find it, then at least you can play it like that.

don't misunderstand im not trying to say any of them were bad or anything, i just accept that as much as i liked them they were products of their time, im a huge fan of ff8 personally, for all its faults.

if we're talking about slightly more mordern jrpgs though, im a pretty big fan of xenoblade (the first one), the interesting world, the unique foresight mechanic, plenty of quests and rewards for exploration, a full party of diverse characters that you can play as, and a story that, while pretty traditional "heros journey" also does a good job of giving you the viewer lots of clues to work out the secrets before the characters in game manage to do so.

yakuza is great, persona is solid (i have a special interest in p4 with its dynamics with the villian)

and of course you cant go wrong with DQ as a series if you just want a very classical adventure.

but yeah, i do think rebirth has done an amazing job, im not surprised why its so well recieved, they really should look at it for future games

i like ff8 a lot too. Possibly the best of the 3 golden age ones. If not for the magic junction problems. With mods, those problems go away, and it's very nice.

i liked how like a dragon did the jrpg thing, but felt it was too basic. It's definitely a direction jrpgs could go it though.
I think DQ has kept the 'golden age' style better than FF, FF has leaned more into the heavy action style like you said, I think it takes more from DMC and souls-likes than the old FFs in its combat gameplay. Many players found fault with the heavier emphasis on minigames/gamifying in this FF title in particular which is more Yakuza than anything else.

Action games are popular but they aren't what many would call the golden age of FF RPGs.

The story moments and character interactions do play into the old form, but the changes and additions make it more obscure to both newcomers and old fans alike, it is really the parts that were left unchanged that lend that old feeling, but you can't count on that for titles that aren't remaking a story people already love.
