hmm its been eons i guess greens were the mountain ones and red wasnt introduced till 9

either way black chocobos have always been the flying ones in FF

No. In the OG, black chocobos were a mix between green and blue ones. Meaning, they could cross mountains and rivers

Actually, in OG, black chocobos are climbing ones.
Red, blue and green ones were no different than yellow, only relevant after black one was golden one.

Blue Chocobo = crossing Rivers
Green Chocobo = crossing Mountain
Black Chocobo = Rivers, Mountains and Shallow Ocean
Gold Chocobo = All together including Deep Ocean to receive KoR
