Give Cait Sith auto weapon and he will do just fine with his moogle. Honestly he is kind of OP once you have a couple abilities. Aerith has problems with ATB charging so you might as well just ignore her unless you want to spam her attacks yourself, then you can get off some magic spells that will devastate.
The lazy ass in me wishes the materia equipped to inactive members would level up too.
Looking it up both of them often come last in both those categories so its not just me
But Aerith does wreck everything if you play her correctly.
EQUIPS
Give all your ATB increasing materia to her. and all your magic attack increasing equips/materias.
ATB stagger
ATB battle start
ATB skill usage
Magic Up material
all of them.
Give her the staff with the strongest magic attack.
Give her 1 magic materia. fire or wind. Whatever her staff skills can increase the damage for. And connect it to an MP absorb materia. This will allow you to cast twice as much magic.
If you have the chocobo cape, give that to her so she can start up in battles fast.
IN BATTLE
Build up some synergy points, so you can use the synergy ability where another party member protects her if she is hit.
Then have aerith cast radiant ward, and arcane ward, and later ATB ward if you have it.
Then you basic attack enemies. If you have to move from the wards that's fine. Just lure them away. When you have enough ATB to cast what you want, press triangle for ward teleport, and immediately start casting.
If you have an aggressive enemy targeting you, wait until they come attack you and then start casting. The radiant ward will make you invincible while casting.
A luck build Cait Sith is probably the only thing in the entire game that actually rivals Aerith.
I find it a bit odd to call the two most powerful characters in the game "useless". You just don't know how to use them yet. Cait Sith makes sense due to having hidden mechanics and a unique design in how you control/manage his parts. Aerith just requires a bit of strategy and using the right skills/setup such as her wards. Radiant Ward, in particular, boosts her auto attacking capability, stagger, and dodging.
Aerith also pairs extremely well with Yuffie for some of the most broken setups you can use.
Aerith is pretty meh, honestly. Sure with the right setup she just dumpsters screens of trash mobs but anyone can do that with the right setup.
What Aerith excels at is abusing her wards with Doppleganger and Quake to petrify everything. She's a petrification bot, basically.
Aerith is a ton of fun to play btw ? Use the wards , tempest and ward shift, and use synergy skills to build ATB fast. I make her my party leader quite often
she absolutely shreds stuff lol, just takes a little time for her to build up.
She is a great boss killer. ;p
Do you see bad intentions in everything you dislike like this ? ;o
Maybe there's none behind it.
