post costa del sol: cloud tifa yuffie
If i do have a choice, then the ones i need to level up weapon skill for.
And then if i finally did everything, its usually Barret and Tifa. Used to be Aerith, but shes too slow to build up AP for my liking. Yuffie is good too
Oh and i dont specialize anyone for anything yet. Until i dont have to (fights arent hard enough), everyone will have just random materia to level up for the most part
Not that either character is objectively worse than my preferred ones. Yuffie was fun as HELL to play in the DLC, for example. And Aerith can ascend to godhood with the build, but micromanaging stuff like laying down the ward, while juggling control of other players, or the fact that the way it FEELS to play as her (I wish her spells were louder, visually and sonically, for example) than Cloud, Barret, or Tifa. I love Tifa especially in rebirth thanks to the how much more fleshed out her aerial combat styles can be. I love opening a battle with Barret's overcharge, or switching to punisher mode as cloud and staggering an enemy at just the right moment. So much fun.
As for Red... well, I barely played him at all in Rebirth and never did get a good grasp on his combat style. Couldn't quite get a good feel for the parrying, building vengence levels, and honestly I bet if I gave it more effort I'd enjoy playing him a LOT more than I can imagine.
But I rarely even replay 100+ hour RPG's even once -- Remake and Rebirth are the only exceptions. Remake on hard mode was especially satisfying and truly took the most advantage of the game's core combat mechanics. Rebirth I'm currently replaying on PC (wish I'd never played the PS5 version TBH because in 4k/60fps on an oled Ultrawide -- the game looks SO much better, to the point where I missed so much environmental storytelling, much of the emotional cutscenes fell flat on PS5 as well because it looked like vaseline was smeared on the screen at all times in 60fps mode. I'd have settled for 30 fps mode but the combat felt too sluggish and unresponsive (as it tends to do, when the latency is doubled).
I really don't like Yuffie's constant squawking, but she's overtuned to the point where she trivializes most mobs with windstorm and the fact that she can always have elemental damage of whichever element you need at the time is just a little too convenient.
I really resent it, because I really don't like her. She talks too much, she's stupid and never really learns or grows as a character and she's not funny or charming, but I guess some designer just had too much of a hardon for her and made her busted.
if i want to win while knowing im basically cheating? Yuffie and aerith
yuffie dodges with brumal form generate a full atb and if you use this on aeriths atb ward everyone gets a atb per dodge thus allowing insane amounts of ability and synergy skills to be used
For most of the fights that are difficult enough for composition to actually matter the game forces a preset party, though.
Aerith is likely my favorite as a character so wanted to stay in my party, but I just cannot seem to get used to playing as her. She seems slow, builds ATB slowly, and dies almost instantly in every fight. I am probably just missing something, because many seem to like her. Also couldn't get used to Cait Sith AT ALL. Felt very clumsy. Red can be a beast (haha) if played right, and Tifa is a LOT of fun to play. Just in high level battles ended up defaulting to the ones that I found easiest or most straightforward to use.
