how does vram work
So i have a 3080 10gb card,

When i play the game specialk shows i have 8.31 available, this changes when i do different things or adjust the scaling. I get scaling higher uses more vram.

I don't get why it shows 8.3 Is that just a safety net? Or does the game think i have less vram then i do

When i do go over what is says available i do drop frames / stutter.

Is this correct?

A system uses ram etc to operate, the word "Available" is crucial here because some ram is already in use. It doesn't mean that you have less Vram it means your system is using some.

The game isn't the only thing using your VRAM, just like DRAM, Windows is also using it for various things like WDM.

okay i see i'm using 1.5 to sometimes 1.7 at the desktop i guess that is why it shows available being less

It's the same with normal Ram, a lot of folk might have 16gb but their system will be using 2gb or what ever, so if I game requires 16gb available and they've only got 14 available they may run into issues.

Is there a way to see which programs use vram instead of normal ram.. i did close discord and vram usage went down

If overload then it offshoot that to system ram but you will feel the slow down.

Even closing steam nets me more vram I'm launching the game through the .exe do i even need steam open ..

Steam opens when i launch the .exe :(

I can hit 4k 60fps at 50% scaling closing discord should net me some more vram

to bad i can't close steam

I'm not sure if there is a program to monitor it exact, probably will be though I couldn't recommend one as I don't use them.

You say when you start the game it shows as 8.31 available is it that just the menus or start screen? Does it show the same when nothing is running?

turning off hardware accelerated in steam also netting me some vram

at the menu it shows 9.07 available is game 8.6

It depends on the part and where... even if you have more VRAM available, it will still use more...
For example, there are some parts where, in full HD, it will use 12.9GB.

(In any case, the requirements mentioned 12GB of VRAM for ultra settings)

at 50% scaling i'm like 93% vram usage at 4k even on medium textures and high background,

i guess i'll play at 33% to be safe

ya i understand that,

I used to play on a 1440p 240hz monitor, but have a back injury so i can't really game at my pc anymore, so i got a 4k oled tv with 120-144hz

I know 3080 isn't really a 4k card, but it seems to be doing the job so far if i use the right settings.

I've been looking at the 5080 series and may get one when i have the money.

The game recommends 12 gb to play on 4k

" 12GB VRAM or above recommended to play on 4k resolution." From the store page, probably where your issues are coming from if you've only 10.

ya i know i wasn't complaining about why it was happening, just trying to understand why it was showing less vram available.

That's why then, a little will be used by the system and then more and more as needed, you can now tune the game around what can be used.
