The tone of this game is...different?
No major spoilers for the OG or the rest of the game, please.

I've just got to bit where Dyne is killed, you have a fight with Palmer, and then Dio comes to save you. Compared to the first part (Remake), the tone of this game feels far different.

That's not to say I'm not enjoying the game, but it's throwing me off a little. We've gone from bombings and entire towns being massacred, to countless mini-games, bad guys who seem to just appear just to cause an inconvenience only to disappear soon after, and a guy swearing nothing but shorts and a cape.

Was the original game equally as daft?

EDIT:

A couple of people are getting angry about comparing it to the original, except...I've only played the original as far as Midgar.

its telling a different story, so its events will functionally be different.

unsure how the tone is different (aside from actually being delivered as opposed to internal dialogue) but thats more of a individual thing.
People will try to gaslight you and say that the original also had 'whimsical' content or something like that but no it was a very different tone on the whole. It feels like it got too big and there wasn't any single sense of direction. Remake felt a lot more coherent, maybe it was just the wrong size project for the staff and time they had.
This game is based on a section of the original FFVIIthat was basically the team going on the world tour. They cover a lot of ground and see many different locations. This part of the game was mostly a valley on the "literary rollercoaster." In that dynamic tension was mostly low. The tone was more light hearted and saw several vignettes. There were some serious times, but, they also dropped away rather rapidly for the most part.

Remake (part 1) and what it was based on, was more focused in the Midgar story arc. It was more serious, with higher apparent stakes.

This one is mostly the party free wheeling until the end.

"People will try to gaslight you"
That's evil people speak. Helping a person interpret things in the most negative way possible.

More likely is that the original game did in fact have the silliest stuff going on, but it was in a different balance than what we got here.
Maybe they wanted to give us more to do while we wait for the next part. Maybe they screwed things up. Maybe they all felt so ♥♥♥♥ already developing the game, that they didn't notice when they felt ♥♥♥♥ during playtesting all the minigames.

I wish more people would play the OG FF7. They'll understand better. Don't worry you'll get your super cereal in Part 3.
this game does have a lot of minigames and the tone IS different but thats one of the points.

this isnt FF7 og this is a entirely new version of thier reality. and hell once could say if we had the game power back then as we do now what the old gold saucer and events would be like.

imo probably a bit more graphic as SE has gotten pretty soft as of late.

It is an "alternate" branch of time. It has nothing to do with the original anymore. All of that went out the window with the end of remake.

Stop comparing this new experience to other experiences. It is now its own. Take it for what it is....or dont.
Its a remake and a sequel to a game which they titled "Remake" but please don't compare it to the original because it is different.

imagine getting that worked up cause calling it gaslighting was dishonest.

People need to understand remake vs remaster.
Aint complicated even if you have major brain damage.

But Ive seen coma-patients spit better takes than what materialized itself out of the buttery-smooth brains on this forum so maybe Im just overestimating people who somehow have aquired the physical ability to play video games while being actually wholly incompetent in any regards to controlling their mental faculties.

Yea, the original game was almost Identical in 'tone'. They actually did a much better job with Dyne and that whole subplot in Rebirth, which is really impressive. Throughout Rebirth youll get the same experience as the original where the characters each grow both in their own depth, and in your understanding of them. Near the end of my first playthrough I was so happy to see that they really managed to make these characters feel like their original counterparts. I was concerned because Remake really felt so bland and repetitious, which now i'm understanding was on purpose to match the rather on rails experience of Midgar on disk 1.

The only tonal mainstay I think the newer ones are missing is the coziness of some of the rural towns/houses. But I think that may have been more the original soundtrack than anything else. Uematsu really struck gold on that.
The original game had a bunch of really goofy nonsense, and the tone was all over the place. Without spoiling any plot, there is a point in the original where you climb a mountain during a snow storm and play a mini game to stay warm. It's treated as a harrowing and life threatenong scenario. Then, when you get to the top, you play another mini game where you snowboard down the mountain (complete with jumps and a scoring system) to get to the next major story sequence. And when you finally get to that sequence, the tone becomes dark and broody again. The original game had some wacky stuff in it and was filled with tone whiplash.
The original was very mature for a videogame when it released. It went from a powerful dark & depressed atmosphere with the player having to piece the story together to a disney fairytale where you're led by the hand all the time.

Don't get me wrong, I love both the original and the remake.
I'm just a bit sad the story isn't as mature as the first one.

What made the story so impactful was its complexity and the full range of emotions delivered. What feels like a simple plot as you're basically teaming with terrorists to fight the evil global corp had lots of great ideas and twists. The whole hero quest was very powerful with beautiful/epic moments despite characters being mute and a bunch of polygons. But the general theme was as dark as can be: sadness, depression, regret, suicide, murder, orphans, mutilation, favelas, refugees, prostitution, the end of days...

On the other hand, the remake is very beautiful (and full of side content) but there is this constant superhero movie good vibe with a pinch of moral superiority that threw me a little off. All has been diluted down to be morally correct and everything feels smily happy no worry.

The whole Cosmo canyon part felt like unwanted education and guilt tripping as I was in a litteral support group filled with condescending folks who wanted to lecture me on boundaries, not hurting each others feelings and required to question my own believes. There even are brief moments were I felt like we were talking about nazis and jews, please tell me I'm not the only one...

Anyway, like you said and without spoilers, the Dyne part isn't as hard as it used to be, the story twists are wasted in advance with too much hints given, Red XIII scene isn't as heartbreaking as it should, the Corel prison isn't a prison...

I really encourage anyone to play a modded version (with better graphics) of the original to get the full picture.

We played the adult version as we were young and now that we're adults we can play the child's version.

Edit: I must say the silliness and the minigames were very present in the original indeed so I'm not shocked at all with those in the remakes! I only regret the toned down darkness direction given to the story.
