Parasite Eve is a great game, Xenogears is a good game, and there's this wierd mindset going on among gamers now days (probably due to the plethora of bots that spread misinformation) that you can only ever have one good thing at a time and you have to hate or dislike everything else. Like.. No, bro. We can all have Parasite Eve and Xenogears remade. If you don't like one then.. don't play it, doesn't mean you have to advocate for me to not get something that would make me happy just because you don't see the point in it, and vice versa more importantly.
Leave Xenogears alone. Don't go ruin that for me as well. Go ruin something else that don't matter, like FF8 or something.
Parasite Eve was a product of its time. Similar to Fear Effect, it just does not resonate with modern audiences the way it did with older gamers. The game would need many changes that you might not like, and others will definitely hate.
Most fans didn't even survive to 3rd Birthday, others didn't make it past Parasite Eve 2 when the franchise lost all of its identity in favor for characters that look like "we have FF8 at home" and gameplay that wanted to capitalize on Resident Evil's popularity.
That's not even mentioning the obvious problem with modern audiences. The oversexualization of the protagonist. If people cannot handle Tifa's tank top, it's going to be a hard push against some of the more creepy elements that made their way into the franchise.
Do I think a faithful recreation of a beloved classic like Parasite Eve can be great? Absolutely! Do I think that would actually happen? Definitely not. What I would expect is a lot of fundamental changes to the game and design that would make me question if it was a good idea. The people in charge of these franchises don't have our best interests in mind, if our interests mean preserving our nostalgia. Their focus is on reinventing these franchises with their vision, not yours.
Outside of the initial dress she wore during opening Opera scene (Which is VERY appropriate dress for the occasion), she wore jeans and leather jacket for the rest of the game. Only thing she revealed was happening from neck up.
I am not sure what issue would original PE1 would have in terms of modern sentiment.
I definitely do not think PE1 was as bad as PE2 or 3, but the developers definitely knew at the time that their character had sex-appeal. The game was rated M, and specifically mentioned partial nudity and sexual themes for a reason.
With that said, I'm not sure that it would even matter if we did preemptively find issues. There are plenty of examples of "censorship" where the majority of the discourse comes specifically from the fact that people didn't find any issues with the original. The key being that just because we don't see an issue, doesn't mean there isn't an issue that cannot be found.
Finally, this is all speculation on my part. There is probably just as much evidence that they will go in the opposite direction. For every Tifa's tanktop there is 2B's skirt. Mostly, my comment is more to do about how fine of a line it really is, vs the idealized version people think of when they say they want a remake.
In short, it's easy to think "I liked this game, a remake is just this game but better" when in reality it's a tightrope where ever deviation from the original can cause the entire experience to fall apart. Since we are in the FFVII forum, I think it's fair to remind people that during mid-2000s when we saw midgar upgraded, and initially begged for a remake, NOBODY could have anticipated Chadley. That's the difference between what you want, and what reality will give us.
"Ok Kimihiko, so you are telling me that if we put some giant knockers that have their own jiggle engine to appeal to the undersexed trad videogame audience we might upset some modern audiences? And if we don't put giant knockers with their own giggle engine on character A, then we risk losing some of our trad audience?"
But yes OP I loved that game, it was the first game I had played in 10 years when I bought a PS1. Rented it from blockbuster I think.
