1. Learn to read what the download window in steam shows and tells you.
its separated into what it downloads and what amount of files it patches after downloading.
2. Patch is 17GB
3. Those 17GB need to update the 100+GB of game files
4. To patch those 100+GB of game files, steam needs to unpack them, patch and repack them, so you need 2x the game size in space for it to be able to do it fast and efficiently.
I ended up just redownloading the whole thing. Will shell out some cash for a new SSD so when the next patch comes I'll just reinstall it on the new drive
