AI Controlled Party Members Dumbed Down?
Is it me or is the aggressiveness of AI controlled party members toned down A LOT compared to Remake? I know in both games whoever you're controlling is going to have the fastest growing ATB gauge because the player is usually spamming attacks, (whether that's by design for balance or not I have no idea) but when comparing the AI from Remake to Rebirth...I feel like in Remake they're all bit fast/more aggresive?

Because 16 hours in set to Dynamic Difficulty, I noticed I can go an entire fight before the other two members have managed to fill even one bar. Is this why there's a mod out there for better AI? I was hesitating to get it for fear it would ruin the game's intended balance.

Either that, or because this game is much more open and has more depth, I'm just more invested in this one that I'm mastering the combat a lot better than I did before.

16 hours says everything. Just play the game and it will get better.

Nah, it needs to be completed twice before it gets better.
They are very passive. maybe because they wanted you to switch between them a lot.

They shouldve been as active as in tales of graces. They can actually kill bosses on lower diffs or rake up high combos in that one, while trying to dodge stuff. In this game i htink all they do is standard weak attack. You have to unfortunatedly attach a materia to them for them to do their special, or another materia for them to cast a spell or ability, but only to the linked materias. Its intentional to be as painful as possible. And they get to pad out combat more to squeeze out more time from encounters, and it also is counterproductive towards the materia set up if you want to automate them to waste slots. In a sense without switching its just you vs a bunch of hard hitting enemies

You have to attach materia to them for them to use their unique abilities, and for them to use auto-cast. But it's better to switch between them
Auto-unique skill materia( this is bad for tifa as she will use her skill and get rid of built up chi) and auto-weapon( just a note this uses what you have set as your 4 quick skills) skill materia are your friends

steadfast block and precision block should be on all ais too. the ai is actually quite competent at getting perfect blocks if you use precision and steadfast makes them take less damage and gain atb when they block

Haste is awesome.

Aeriths ATB ward actually generates ATB on other characters when she attacks. and also note you can layer all 3 of aeriths wards on top of each other. and arcane ward works on the synergy attack materia

Yeah I feel like they tried to balance those Materia with the AI being a bit nerfed. I do think they overcompensated a bit though.

It was probably done to encourage you to swap more often, but it is a bit much, yeah. I wish there was a way to adjust their tactics like in Kingdom Hearts

You are supposed to manually fill their bars, not wait for them to fill...

That part of combat I expected though, it's the same as the last game. I wouldn't want the AI to use special attacks on their own either. What I am referring to is, as Sauriel said, just basic weak attacks; it seems like they do that even less than than they did in Remake.

I do switch between them to fill them up, but during boss fights when I absolutely must keep the pressure on them with my active character, that's a lot more difficult to pull off, and it would be nice if the others had attacked often enough to fill at least one bar after a period of time. It doesn't have to be as fast as the player can do it, but at least half or a quarter of the speed would of been sufficient.

Op to answer your question, yes its a problem and anyone with common sense knows this. I recommend using the more aggressive AI mod with the 2.5 health mod for a much more challenging and engaging combat.

As for the comment I responded to mentioning your playtime, people on this board like to gaslight you into thinking the the legitimate issues with this game are somehow your fault as this issue DEFINITELY does NOT get any better as the game progresses.

I didn't really take it as gaslighting, more like there was going to be something I unlock or acquire later that would make the AI better, or more active.
with the amount of auto-cast, auto unique ability and auto weapon ability you get, they're only passive cause you want them to

cloud with autocast time slows the ♥♥♥♥ of the enemies and clutched a number of fights. aerith with autocast cure don't let anyone die. yuffie with auto bravery/faith(forgot the name of the materia) knows when to buff physical damage and magical damage and who uses what. she used mag damage buff on cloud on a fight where the enemy resisted physical damage, and use physical as well on him depending on the situation.

the materia system and how allies behave was improved in every way possible, i wonder how they can improve it even more for part 3

not a chance, they just shatter & are useless on say ... someone like .. aerith where it's a literal .... for a character that don't move that much.

This mod will make the party more aggressive without trivializing the game combat.
