Although. FF 13-2 was kinda fun.
It was...then they ruined it with lightning returns. Remains the only Final Fantasy with 2 sequels after it.
Not sure if this is a joke or not, but it runs worse, a lot worse.
16 is a action game, the combat is fun but very shallow with no elemental weakness, negative status, combos are very limited, no weapon variation, skill tree is a joke, mainly you just evade and use skills that fill the stagger bar faster, wait for Cooldowns, do it again until the enemy is staggered and use all your hp damage skills, then repeat until it's dead. The RPG elements are worthless, no party members, it's very easy, exploration is barely there, no minigames and the performance is truly abysmal in places but still playable on my RTX4060. BUT it's a finished game and the story is good enough, i liked most of the characters but the Eikon battles are what make the game worth it. For me a 7.5 or 8/10.
Now Rebirth is a action RPG and the combat has a lot more going for it, from enemy variation to builds, elemental weakness, materia, etc. Plus you have 7 very different characters to control, there is a lot of exploration and minigames( maybe too much even), it a lot harder than 16, i like all the main characters but the new npc's are very annoying and the story is incomplete and kinda of a mess. The performance is way better all around. for now it's 8 or 8.5/10.
They are very different games, so if you want a action game with a finished story go with 16. if you are a fan of 7 or want large "open" world with lots of exploration and minigames, combat with more depth and don't mind a incomplete story go with Rebirth. But they are both good games.
Ultimately it is more of an action adventure game with an epic high fantasy/sci fi story, but I think it sticks the landing on everything it has going for it. As the story progresses, side characters you meet become fleshed out via side quests that give more background into how the ever changing world has affected their lives.
The combat is a blast once you fine tune your abilities and lean into the fact that it is easy to grasp but difficult to master. You won't be challenged too often, but your character is the most powerful being on the planet, so it makes sense to me that you are an absolute wrecking machine.
I also recently purchased FF7 Rebirth and have been having a blast with this one as well. You can't go wrong with either game.
FF16 is a stand alone game, so if you are interested in getting a complete story, get that one for sure. I highly recommend buying FF7 Remake and Rebirth also though.
-FF4-9 (10 was fun when it was released but now i consider it one of the worst, especially if you dont get the remake with the new sphere grid)
-FF12 & FF13-2 (13 was good but 13-2 has some of the best mechanics of all the FF games, including one of the best monster collection and formula creation mechanics of literally any game to exist)
-FF15 & 16 are easy trash story games not for real gamers. If you want a story game with almost no difficulty then they are for you
-FF7 remakes are better than 15 & 16 because they have real challenges and better mechs.
-FF Strangers of Paradise is amazing and hard with a great backstory into FF1 (and really all FF games to some degree)
-FF tactics advanced games are also good for players of GBA games.
- Finally, some people really like the Dissidia games.
Those are my recommendations with a major recommendation being FF13-2 if you like monster collection games, it has some of the best monster ability formula mechanics i've ever seen.
Buy the cheaper game and finish it.
Then buy the next game you want to play.
Im not a Fan of FF for Kids=9 and prefer 8 with Squall+Rinoa over it.
6: is good but still has SNES Graphic=needs a Remake too.
4: the 3DS Version + The After Years is something you can play too
