FF7 Rebirth is more fun than FF16 for me.
What do you mean "Which is which"?

FF16 is the latest entry in the series while FF7 Rebirth is the second game of the "FF7 Remake project".

That's pretty much it.

There is a reason why Squeenix and other companies do like soft reboots. Someone who does not follow the series will think, he has to play every Final Fantasy before ff16 to get the whole story.

Almost every FF is a stand alone story.

Try FF 10. I think its one of the best. Other good games are :
FF 6
FF 9
FF 7 (not the remake)
FF 7 Remakes (after you have played the old one)

It's called an anthology, hence why these games tend to spawn more entries.

Rebirth for me. I do enjoy 16 and have a lot more progress to make in it, and in many ways it feels more like 1-6 with the setting and linearity, but it didn't hook me yet. Rebirth is a lot more open, but in a way that matches the original 7 (and all the others after 5 I suppose) with open though limited sections of the map, a fair amount of backtracking possible but still limited by progress but with added fast travel (honestly yesterday I went all the way back through the mines to tick off the last thing I forgot in Kalm, then a few minutes after re-entering the Junon region found the ranch that let me fast travel it instead so it's very liberal. Still unsure about the Ubisoft map but it does save me some exploration time while still letting me trace the edges of the map and completely reveal it, like I'm want to do.)

16 worth a play at some point, Rebirth is a lot more fun with a LOT more to do.

Agreed with these recommendations, though I can't neglect 8 - it didn't click for a lot of people but it was my personal favourite. 7 was the best but 9 blew it away in many ways. 10 is a must play and I don't care what others say but I loved Blitzball.

For something more casual but still quintessential FF the 3D remakes of 3&4 are good games to get cheap on mobile or Steam. Still dated compared with the later ones which added meaningful endgame and exploration, but there is a reason the series was popular enough to keep churning out. It is not essential to play through them all though, at all. There is a recurring motif, but not a recurring or ongoing meta story.

But if I had to choose just one, play 9 and fall in love with its charm.

Crazy I never liked 9, 8 was my first Final Fantasy, and I loved it, then I played 7 and I loved it even more. 9 came out and it was a bit meh for me, it felt very linear after 7 & 8, then X came out and I loved it even though its probably just as linear as 9. :tgrin:
FF 8 was fun. But the Card Draw mechanic is a big turn off for me. The same problem with level scaling. But, after all these years. I kinda like level scaling now.

FF8 is absolute gold. The fact that many people didn't like it makes it even better to me.

I wouldn't start with FF7 Rebirth that's for sure.
At least, start with FF7 Remake, then Rebirth.

But as other have said, if you really want to experience Final Fantasy, I would start with the Playstation 1 era (if you are stuck on PC, Duckstation is the best way to experience those games imo). FF7 OG, FF8, FF9 are amazing. FF10 on PS2 is also very good.

If you just want to play modern Final Fantasy, I would say that FF7 Remake and Rebirth are good (but they lose a lot of their power if you don't know the original, though it's just my opinion).

I haven't played FF16 yet but the "Game of Thrones" vibes aren't really working for me. Maybe later.

Important to know that each Final Fantasy (with very few exceptions) is stand alone so you can play them in any order. The number is irrelevant.
