Question about relationship

Regarding relationship points, if I skip those for Red and Barret, will it negatively affect my battles (because they can't "cooperate well")?

I feel awkward doing so, so I prefer not doing it, rather than select an option...

It doesn't affect the gameplay, the relationship in this game affects a later moment in the story, you can improve the relationship with the character you are most interested in.

Be careful though, because using synergies in combat with another character also increases the relationship, although not much, and finally you have the side quests that also increase it, if you are worried about this you can prioritize doing the side quests of the character you prefer.
