Which materia is worth using?
In the first game, and I assume this problem will be present in this one too, the game kept throwing materia at me that I simply didn't have the available slots to use.

I see some new types exist in this... Looks like HP up etc. got nerfed in terms of how many you can use due to a cap on effectiveness. But it's not like I really had space for more than one anyway.

Also, in the Nibelheim flashback section of the game I found that despite using the magnify materia with certain spell material e.g. Comet, Time materia, the one that lets you cast Barrier, it didn't seem to want to let me hit multiple targets.

What does it work with?

Really? Nobody?

Can anyone at least explain why the magnify multi target effect never seemed to be working for me? I'm guessing it doesn't work on multiple targets on the same boss enemy.

Perhaps the rest of the time the enemies weren't close enough together?

Depend on your playstyle, but there are awesome materia combinations later on, you can burst damage or get a Tank that is unkillable or a healer tank or what ever, try your play style and find out.

You have to get the Magnify Materia with the Materia you want to use for multi target in two slots where they are bind together, then this materia can do multi target hits.
magnify + heal is the only real useful application of magnify, cheapest and strongest mass heal. In the end game you'd still would prefer chakra/pray to not waste mp, but if you are not like on hardmode endgame then heal just works.

Enemy Skill with Skill Master is insane combo.

There are lot of different builds on all kind of wiki sites, game is old enough to have everything sorted out. Just google it.

magnify has to be linked to the spell your casting, it does not give all your spells aoe's.

Or auto Spell and Medica materia is awesome.

Chakra and heal are the only mandatory materia imo. Everything else is up to your personal preference. there should be OP combos with the time materia, which is probably for tryhards. Otherwise just use some heal/chakra + your favourites and enjoy the game. Precision defense materia is also quite nice

The materia that heals you based on the damage you deal to the enemy is nice too.

Hp <=> mp materia if you're extremely good at parrying. You can generate limit break almost instantly with that materia
yeah there are some useful combos but materia system in the remakes is not as impactful as the original you can pretty much auto attack everything with someone
this is character dependent and the weapon you choose to use are important for making a build good. more materia slots isnt always better ie clouds sleek sabre can give you 20% faster atb generation on basic attack that gets boosted by haste then you throw on the enemy skill plasma discharge and your constantly exploding with electricity

Enemy skill materia is actually Very strong.
Elemental materia is also quite good and some weapons even buff this
Time materia is a must have for haste and more importantly Stop (stops stagger bar from depleting)

Auto-weapon(note that this uses what you have set as your quick skills so if its all magic this is pointless) skill and auto-unique are both must haves imo

Hp up materia can be good

bar a few bosses and the weapons you could clear nearly all of ff7 original game with literally just normal attack, limit break and white wind enemy skill.

Yes I know, and I did. I had the icon next to my magic telling me it was multi target but it just wasn't HITTING the targets. As I said though, part of this was multiple locations on a boss enemy so it might just not work that way.

are you trying to say that the materia system in the remakes is as crazy powerful as the orginal lol.

Never said anything like that.Hard to understand where you came to that conclusion?
Maybe you quoted wrong person i dunno.
Anyway my point is that most materia wasnt even needed to complete most of original ff7 just like in remake.Especially when the later limit breaks were so op and easy to build up if keep characters with fury status that more than 99% of time materia didnt matter, bar some needed heals and the phoenix-final attack,w summon -knights of the round - hp absorb mime combo for the ultimate weapons.
