How are y’all feeling about the combat
Ngl, playing on Normal and the combat feels kinda overwhelming. Seems like a huge step up from the Remake.

I stopped treating it as a Souls game, that was when I saw some improvement, but you definitely need mad micro management and “APM” for this it seems.

Playing as Cloud is somewhat doable, but if I switch to Aerith the mobs lock me into dodge spam almost instantly. Once you’re forced into a defensive playstyle it kills your ATB generation and from there on it’s a downward spiral. Some of the research mob groups absolutely destroyed me.

I’m still pretty early into the game so does this actually get better later on with more Material, gear and talents?

I have to say i really enjoy the combat in this part. Much much better than remake.

Combat is good. I especially like being able to hold the attack button to close distance on the enemy (can't remember if that was in Remake)
switch characters often and do the vr character tutorials so you learn how to use them. also block instead of dodge most of the time, and learn to perfect block. dodge has no iframes, it is just movement

the combat is insanely good and a crazy adrenaline rush.

I don't know when you played Remake but your 2nd paragraph is true to Remake as well.
The synergy elements are really bloating out the combat menus. Bloat, in general, is a big issue with this game, but, in particular, the way that these extraneous and duplicate commands clutter up the menus is pretty annoying, on top of making it a real hassle to issue commands while blocking.

In effect, it is impossible to issue a command and block simultaneously.

yeah everyone says that it is way better than the remake
for me it's worse

in the remake you could hold the blockbuton to parry here you have to perfectly time it
all the mobs are extreme agro and won't stop attacking the only way to stop them is to pressure them (some won't even stop if there pressured)

so the only thing you can do is to learn to perfectly time the block button (works with every character)

and no it won't get better
definitely the worst part of the game

the combat is by far the strongest aspect of the game as far as im concerned

I recommend the materia that increases perfect block window and just blocking rather than dodging unless its an unblockable ofc.

I like synergy skills but the requirements for synergy abilities seem a bit steep for the payout they provide.

Due to the synergy ability requirements i do end up switching characters a lot during combat so everyone gets to build meter somewhat evenly (you should do that anyway everytime you cast an ability/spell if you want to optimize gameplay since you cant build ATB while those are casting anyway).

I really like it overall. The gameplay depth is amazing and the enemy design is fantastic.
i hope they change the ATB system next game, in the meantime iam waiting for the aggressive companions mod from remake to return its annoying that i can build up like 20 ATB bars before any of my teammates can even get 1
The biggest issue is all of the synergy bloat. Way too many things in the menu.
I have to admit, Cloud's "teleporting" lateral-strafe maneuver, based on the final combat scene in Remake against Sephiroth, looks incredibly stupid.
I like it, I think they could polish Clouds air combat a bit more, because it's really weird in how it works, but otherwise I really like how you can set things up and stuff, it's really awesome to build up certain stacks, perfect parry and speed around enemies.

I wish the slowdown from the commands menu would also apply for synergy moves because it's kinda hard to breathe when I change my teams around often, and the combat is pretty fast, and I gotta look and see what moves are available for me. It's a pacebreaker.

Otherwise, love the combat, better than remake, but still not perfect. Teammates regen ATB extremely slow, and that's okay for some people, because that means you gotta switch between characters and play them all, but sometimes it's annoying for minmax setups

For me the combat system has potential, but there are quite a few things that are horrible, I hope in the third part they add a system like the gambits of ff12, and being able to manage what each teammate does and who to attack with what priority, being able to rotate characters and make materia changes in combat. And please, don’t let enemies interrupt a skill when they attack you.

In the case you mention with aeirth, it is quite weak at the beginning since it is difficult to generate ATB bars, you have to be playing with synergies and blocks, once you get materia to boost or start with more ATB it is more manageable, although I prefer the gameplay with tifa and another character that appears later.

Not sure about that. There are enemies that you have to dodge to pressure them, and if you dodge at just the right time, you won't take any damage. I tried pressing earlier, but even when I was far away from the enemy, I still got damage
Ive started basically melee attacking till I get my abilities cast an ability and switch to the next character while that ability is getting cast and do the same thing with the next character, rinse and repeat. Its been working pretty good. Sometimes I do think about switching to classic for a less chaotic fighting system.

I think I liked FF16 combat more, mostly because it was more skill based, maybe too easy to cheese dodges but it was satisfying to play. Played Remake years ago on playstation, didn't recall it being much different, perhaps noticed Barret seems weaker.
