only if you haven't played remake i guess
Nanaki (vii Red Xii)was always originally a another species or a hound or wolf like cross species., along with Deneh, the same.

Tetsuya Nomura created him and he became Red XII later and then in Vii as a quadruped experimented on by the professor.

Nanaki was also used in other FF game variations playing with the nanaki name variant rather then the Vii red Xiii.

Another variant was a quadruped that could shape shift to appear human., but it was a glamour spell.

Before Crises told the story of him in The howl that shook heaven and earth.

Original game adaption - showed him as shun-Nanaki- shift wolf. Due mainly to some hardware limitations. The Shinra infitry disguise for him to try and walk upright but pay closer attention to his text saying how hard it was to fool them and walk upright.

He still was not a human. HE has always been a wolf like quadruped designed by Tetsuya Nomura

HE certainly does not look like a dog and follows Tetsuya PRECISE drawings from long ago including the hair tuffs. He infact made it precise for this remake and it follows his desire.

Oh yeah.. There was Ehrgeiz too. It had Red, Tifa, Cloud, Zack, Yuffie, and Sephiroth to use as fighters. And red was a "dog" in that too,

(P.S. your mention of glamour really makes me want Wolf Among Us 2)

XIV online added a Red XIII Glamour and a Red XIII dog pet. I always had him following me around

Nothing wrong with the design. I mean more that hes become a comic relief character that gets excited when offered a piece of meat by a guy calling him goodboy.

do you think hes better off as a comic relief dog who wags his tail and pounces on a steak thrown to him rather than a character?

god i hope critique of a character isnt a spoiler
I don't understand. He has always been a dog. A smart one who can talk. What's the problem? He isn't performing for scooby snacks or speaking by barking.

There is a scene during the quest for one of the rare monsters in the grasslands where the quest giver keeps treating him like a dog - he always growls - and at the end the quest giver throws him some meat and he basically does a pirouette to grab it.

The sidequests in general are written really poorly.

He also gets pet a lot by kids.

Certainly a pretty valid complaint if comparing to the original.

To be fair, if a regular dog likes being petted, it stands to reason that a smart dog would like being petted. He just might find it embarassing.

Would I be right in assuming in this quest he's pretending to be a dumb animal to avoid awkward questions?
Just completely ignoring how he provides information and backstory as your playing. Every character in the game has moments where theyre silly doing something for comedic effect.. its called range. The characters are not just one note.
