Keep playing and you'll see. That part is a flashback :)

Didn't play the OG, eh? No worries, enjoy the ride. When you finish, I recommend giving OG FFVII a chance. There are mods you can use to pretty the game up as well.

Are you even paying attention? Chapter 1 is a flashback... Cloud is literally narrating for you.

The context is right there. Barret asked Cloud to explain how he knows Sephiroth.

This is the simple part of the story. It gets way more confusing from here. Unless they cleaned things up a little since the original game, lol

a flashback is a type of narrative tool used in media that allows the writer to show the audience past events in a way that is interesting to the narrative without it being a monologue.
I don't know if this is real or a troll. Is the attention span really that bad these days?

Oh, well maybe don't do that so you can know what's going on instead of wasting your time not playing the game and asking people to bring you up to speed with content you skipped. Isn't there a 1.5x speed option? Use that instead of just blatantly skipping everything.

there are plenty of games where story isn't a factor in the game: such as monster hunter, but if you want to know the story, you gotta listen to the story, to no surprise.

Then either you're just trolling (poorly as well if that's the case) or you're trying out a game in the completely wrong genre for your tastes/preferences.

Why are you playing a remake of a legendary 90s JRPG if you don't want a story?

I'm going to be frank with you: The original game came out around the same time as Unreal Tournament, and back then what Square was known for most was having these huge, sprawling stories that spanned 3-4 discs, featuring really colorful casts of characters and set in foreign worlds with a mix of magic and retro technology (e. g. not the real world, and you're expected to learn things about them).

You possibly bought the wrong game.
