Yeah, you kinda need to play it to get the characters and general "story" but it's absolutely not worth it. Just play the OG game if you're okay with graphics from 1997 and you'll experience the full story in 20-25 hours with little to no filler content. FF7R is 90% filler fetch quests. Terrible modern day adaptation.

If you know how it ends or have seen the ending on Youtube, then you're fine just jumping striaght to RB, you won't lose anything
As already mentioned you do get bonuses for having Remake and Intermission DLC save data on your PC, however nothing specific about your saves carry over. It can be an early game save or a complete save game; it doesn't make a difference. The game only cares whether you have the data at all.
