Surround sound issues, center channel?
Anyone else having issues with surround sound?

I just started and got to Nibelheim, so small amount of data.

Sound in the cinematics seems about right, but in the two battle scenes so far, it seemed like the center channel was almost or entirely muted while the rest seemed to be mixed correctly.

So, sword swings, impacts, monsters sounds seemed almost muted, maybe only coming in on the non-center channels, just barely.

Yes Atmos only working in cutscenes for me. All gameplay is L+R channel only and sounds muffled/poor quality as well.

Was just going to make a thread myself to see if others had this issue.
Yeah, I'm running surround through Atmos, too, through eARC. There's one other post about it right after ours, but not seeing anything else. I wonder if most people running surround on PC use something else that's actually working? I would think that the described setup I/we have would be one of the most common. Mostly commenting to bump.
Same issue when switching to DTS X.
Only cutscenes seem to be properly playing back spacial audio formats. The rest of the game seems to only support or at least is only playing back 2ch regardless of settings/setup.

I did find that upsampling from 2ch with DTS neural X worked. At least if you want a more consistent experience. However that obviously wont be the same as true Atmos/DTS X. But it will use your center channel properly.

Hopefully this is something that gets patched. I can't imagine it is supposed to be that way. At least that would be a first for me seeing a case like this.
I don't know a lot about audio, but I've also noticed that it feels like a lot of the audio (especially in combat) feels muffled when coming from the center. I have all of my audio from my headset running through the SteelSeries GG Sonar tool. Any help from someone a bit more knowledgeable would be great!

UI sounds are fine, it's just like everything else, from dialog to SFX, etc. Any ideas on how I can fix/combat this till it's patched? It doesn't feel like it's supposed to be like this.
Do people know that windows os doesn't support Atmos, DTS x and other fancy sound tech by default? On some sound tech you actually have to buy the support via Ms store first.

Hell, I came to this forum because I thought the audio sounded quite poor even with my 2.0 setup. The mixing is really bad and a lot of dialogue and soundfx sounds poor/muffled.
Surround sound on Windows is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ abysmal, so many damn hoops to jump through. It's a miracle HDR finally works

Yes I have both.
I am streaming 5.1 uncompressed via steam link and speakers work correctly, all sounds are positioned correctly, AVR gets 5.1 PCM but volumes are inconsistent and wrong. Background sounds like rain are most times louder than speaking people from center, music seems to love changing volume even if not changing direction of camera.
But center speaker works for me, besides volume is too low usually.

Currently I have set my receiver to use upmixed stereo to get a almost usuable constant volume ranges but that loses correct positioning of sounds front/rear.

As for the video scenes working for people, thats usually because videos have hard encoded multi channel formats while game engines itself most times outputs uncompressed channels depending on your windows settings. Of course some people might have set their windows format to DTS etc. I usually avoid those.
Just played locally at my pc which has analog 5.1 connected and center speaker seems to be at correct volume (besides its strange it seems to lack any low tones when eg Sepiroth is speaking). Not sure whats the difference, both should work the same technically seen

I find this to be the best solution as well currently. DTS NEURAL X works pretty well if you have a receiver that supports it.
I have a 7.1 surround setup through a Denon X3800H running an all Klipsch setup. The audio mix sounds flat. Almost like the game is defaulted to Stereo, with no option to switch anything. Remake sounds WAY better. 1 example is when Cloud uses Braver, there's no longer a low frequency bass rumble when he slams down. Remake had it & sounded awesome. Rebirth's sound stage sounds weak & needs to be addressed or at least add Audio options.

Side note: For anyone having other types of issues with surround in windows, make sure you select 5.1/7.1 etc in your audio settings. Either way, Rebirth just sounds flat.

Edit: I just re-downloaded Rebirth on PS5 Pro, and the soundstage sounds WAY better. Full bass and everything.

I think its an encoding problem of the game, my guess is it has different encodings depending what the sound device supports. Streaming 5.1 to FireTV stick connected to my Denon AVR has bad surround while using analog out 5.1 locally at the pc works really good, I would test switching streaming audio source but that would force me to use moonlight/sunshine instead steam/link and moonlight currently wont output surround on android devices with high HDMI/HDCP-versions. So for now I play in my computer's room with worse HDR instead of the living room woth great HDR and worse surround :steamhappy:
same issue here combat center audio is really muffled :/ let me know if you guys find a fix using hyperx cloud 3 wireless and all the other audio is perfectly fine
