Bond, Hero, and Ruler are quite easy. Most minigames are easy too.
But if you compare it to most games that doesn't require even a quarter of brain and motoric skill, this game is such a breath of fresh air.
Side Quests focus on each party member's thoughts. We get to know more of each character.
Towns are actual towns. It isn't just some random building for background visuals. They are all there to serve a form or function for that specific town.
Ploygon Tifa looks like Tomb Raider.
I like the music updates. I still like the og music better, but the remake stuff is really good and I like how it blends music as you explore at times and mixes things up to keep it from being stale.
I like that they put in major effort to make each character well designed and good enough to main as your potentially preferred played character and not just some random side teammates.
I like they overhauled and continue to improve the combat system and materia, though there are still balance issues with Cloud and Aerith being way too potent, though it is obvious they at least attempted to fix some of this (but did not succeed).
I liked the various dialog when exploring some locations and how they handled the larger party throughout the story instead of focusing on only 1-2 characters at a time in every major arc. A good example is how it handled the entire group on the hike up the mountains, or the Mythril Mines stuff, and many more situations. Often, FF games make it feel like the rest of the party is invisible until their one or two segments in the entire story.
I like expanded story moments like Kalm, Junon upper, etc.
I liked seeing the towns come to life (though the open world outside of towns was lacking), though I wish you could have more events with the party members throughout the town.
The HDR is even more amazing (absolutely one of, if not currently the best of any game atm) compared to Remake with the more vibrant varied colors available, at least on a good HDR display. The transition from dark to bright areas though with the white light effect is brutal tho...
When I find time I'm quite looking forward to doing a run through with the UEVR mod, particularly in towns and stuff to really bring the experience to life.
I love the character development. I love the little moments where the characters interact. I especially love the developing sister-like relationship between Tifa and Aerith. The OG never showed this and ReBirth does a phenomenal job--leading to this end game moment (MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD): the shattered, utterly broken look from Tifa at the end of the game after Aerith dies. It was so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ heart breaking!
I love the combat system, it is incredibly fun and a nice blend of real time with the classic ATB. The world design in general, but revisiting iconic locations like Cosmo Canyon just felt beautiful. Cosmo canyon as my childhood imagination saw it--so nice.
Cissnei's return in Gongagga was a VERY wonderful surprise, and it is a nice little nod to Crisis Core fans! It leaves me many questions too.
OH and the MUSIC. My god the music. They NAILED it. Awesome slight remixes of the old music. Their brand new music is great--I love just chilling in the Junon region, that ♥♥♥♥ is DINGO. And the new vocal piece brought me to effing tears.
And I am an OG fan. I get it, a lot of fans wanted a 1:1 remaster. But Square told us from the start, it isn't a remaster, it's a re**MAKE** which is entirely different. And, I personally theorize, it is a sequel (plenty of evidence to back this up).
So I don't personally give a rats ass about any negativity. MOST people have only positive things to say--OG fans or otherwise. It's only a certain subset of "fans" that are crying like little babies and trolling the forums every day.
The Cissenei stuff was interesting. Kind of feel bad for her considering Zack, but it was a cool detail. I hope we get to see more of that in episode 3, and even a brief moment for Cissenei to say bye to Zack or something (though it would be a different Zack, technically).
Considering how they've handled relationships and additional characters I'm curious to see how they handle Lucrecia, Vincent, and Cid/Shera. Considering how he marries Shera eventually and even named his ship after her in Dirge I wonder if they plan to do a lot more with those two this time around to show his hard vs soft sides and dreamer vs his usual front. I'm actually looking forward to Wutai visit with how they've handled Yuffie so far, and because I like the themes of the town's design/culture. I'm expecting quite a bit from it, even more than other towns.
Oh I am so there with you too. Vincent/Lucrecia/Hojo triangle is going to be insane to see in Rebirth, and I hope they keep it in.
I also hope (and this is heresy to some) that we really do get to change Aerith's fate once and for all. It's been over 20 years, throw us a frikkin bone here Square
Same with the cast that we know and love, we got to see SO much more of their personalities. everything was pieced together over the years on how we thought characters were, but this game reinforced all those feelings.
The minigames, a pain for most, understandably. But everyone has their own favorites and taste in them, and i appreciate them, because when the game is over and done...Those annoying minigames keep me in the universe just a little bit longer. And i appreciate that each one required coding and effort, they all had insane variety that wasnt just copy paste work.
The music that makes each level memorable. That bring out so much emotions depending on the song. Crazy Chocobo, Aeriths theme, Stamp, yuffies theme, all so good.
And I get it, everyone wanted a remake...but i love they Integredaded it because it can get the community together and talking all things FF again. theory crafting, predicting whats coming, what changed. its fun to me.
As someone who didn't play the original, the story, characters and worldbuilding are great aswell and i enjoyed the game alot.
Thank you! I'm glad someone did at least! FF7 is one of those games that has a LOT of sentimental meaning for me, so it was very difficult to review Rebirth objectively. For the flaws it does have, it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the game.
Well. Except for (Cosmo Canyon spoiler ahead) Nanaki's way too young sounding voice later--MAYBE that did. A little LOL
FAIR, my thing is, he is supposed to be the equivalent of a teen, not a 10 year old. So it kept weirdly throwing me off. I got used to it but it took awhile.
Yeah, the first time I heard a vocal song in a video game, if you discount One Winged Angel--would be Eyes on Me from FF8. That song still has a special place in my heart, and every now and again my wife will sing it.
