Summons, earthbound, dying interaction

So I thought or at least I thought I understood that when a character dies in combat who used a summon that summon would automatically use their big boy attack and leave.

However I had Tifa summon Phoenix she then got earthbound and died. However Phoenix just sort of milled around doing nothing until I eventually lost the fight as Aerith had already died and Cloud also got caught in an earthbound thus also dying.

Maybe I'm just wrong but I'm 99% sure in other times where I've had a character die who summoned something the summon would then do their final attack basically right away.

Anyone got any info on this? To confirm to maybe explain what happened and why?

For understanding I was doing Gongaga Battle Intel: Distant Tremors.

When you summon something any of the characters can use its abilities. If you don't use your ATB to tell it to do its special moves then it will just do little basic attacks that barely do anything, just like your AI characters.

I don't know anything about the dying interaction if that is a thing, I have never seen it but I didn't die that often. Normally the summon will only use its special move when the timer runs out, that is like its countdown to its ultimate and then it leaves, I don't think it cares if you die or not.
