Remapping the bumper and trigger buttons on a controller?
In short, I want to remap the bumper and trigger buttons to effectively swap them so that R1 and L1 function as R2 and L2 and vice versa -- essentially I'd like for Guard / Synergy Skill to be R2 and I'd like for the Shortcut Menu to be L2 with R1 and L1 functioning as my command buttons. After playing Remake Part 1 and having guard be on R2 the entire time having it be locked to R1 feels awful. Is there any way to remap these buttons? I can't find a way that will allow me to do it in-game.

Just remap them in the controller settings through Steam. I make remap templates for nearly every game I play.

I didn't even think to try doing it through steam, honestly. A bit short sighted on my part, but you're a life saver nonetheless! Them being swapped in Rebirth was driving me insane, tysm~
I personally have tried this and it hasn’t worked. I don’t what I’m doing wrong but now the trigger effectively opens the quick menu and simultaneously causes my character to block so Cloud is just blocking in suspended animation. This is quite frustrating. Not really sure why they decided the triggers were indispensable as the ally quick menu buttons in contrast to remake where these buttons could be reassigned.

I almost don't even know if I can continue with Rebirth. I just spent over 60 hours in Intergrade with the Bumper and Trigger buttons re-mapped because it's way more comfortable for my hands and now there's literally no way to get that back, they have hard-coded the controller support and even Steam Input doesn't fix it.

The issue is that you cannot make the game NOT recognize the controller which is why the remapping does nothing. You'd have to get some generic version of a controller the game can't natively support. This is so stupid. The bumper buttons on PS5 and XBox controllers are horribly placed, who's freaking hands work like that?

remap it in game, you will have some trouble remapping via steam for Bumpers and Triggers because these has two types of activation, so it causes double inputs.

I have remapped attack and defense to R1 and L1 respectively so its aligned with other active action games

Sorry but no, this does NOT WORK on PC. The LT and RT triggers are grayed out and the game will not let you remap them.

Thankfully I figured it out!

Use Steam Input and remap using Steam Input settings. The only trick is to specifically go into the triggers and DISABLE ANALOG OUTPUT, which is in the second/lower half of the settings when you click the cog icon next to "RIGHT TRIGGER BEHAVIOR" or "LEFT TRIGGER BEHAVIOR" . Change the "Analog Output Trigger" option to "Analog Off". I also changed my primary setting at the top to "Simple threshold" since that's really all we want here.

(Also don't forget to remap LB and RB to LT and RT respectively.)

Now I can block with RT and bring up my shortcut menu with LT as well as use the bumpers for speed up and party commands. The analog output was what caused steam input to have multiple outputs for the buttons.
