Question regarding this and other FF games.
I never got into Final Fantasy games but I want to try them. I have a problem though which to start with and how connected these games are, and I wonder if anyone could help me slightly understand this game series.

I want to start with the ones available on steam, minus the FFXIV online, which I've tried, but didn't like.

So, help fellow confused human out and tell me which game I should start with? I'm not interested in the 2D era, mostly the most up-to-date games/remakes.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrande, Final Fantasy XVI, or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? What is the connection between these games? What is the chronological order if the stories are connected?

Thank you.

FFX and FFX-2 are connected story wise as are FF7 Crisis Core, FFVII Remake, and FFVII Rebirth.

FFXVI is it's own story and not connected to anything else. FFVII remake and rebirth are connected story wise, but most are not connected story wise. So out of the 3 games you listed can start with FFXVI or FFVII Remake.

There is no direct narrative connection between the games. They are all stand alone games with their own worlds and characters, except obviously for direct sequels. You can literally start with any entry you like.

Personally, I would reccomend that you start with a more modern Final Fantasy game like Final Fantasy VII Remake (the Intergrade version is pretty much just the "ultimate edition" with graphical updates and a DLC) and then move on to its direct sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. You could also try out Final Fantasy XVI, which is also an excellent Final Fantasy game. It is just set in a completely different universe and also has a different combat system.

ff 1
ff 2
ff 3
ff 4 -----ff 4 after years
ff 5
ff 6 is my personal favorite although quite old.
crisis core ---- ff7 remake intergrade ----- ff 7 rebirth
ff 8
ff 9
ff 10 ----- ff 10-2
ff 11 is an old mmorpg, i have not played it
ff 12
ff 13 is a trilogy but just dont play this, its the worst ff, you ll probably regret it.
ff 14 is a mmorpg, and quite a good one despite having some flaws.
ff 15
ff 16

you can start at the first of any of those lines, crisis core is a prequel to ff 7, so some people will tell you to play it before and others after, but chronologically it goes first.

i recomend to start with the ff 7 saga given it has remakes and remasters and stuff, and they are really good.
if you dont mind playing old games, 6 and 10 are the best ones.
i would avoid 15 and 16 but thats just my opinion, i have not enjoyed them but they are the most modern ones i guess so you might like them.

How does this work with the various releases of FINAL FANTASY VII remakes? Like, do you continue your game between them since its the same characters/story continuation? Or do they not transfer in between

saves only give you bonus items so basically it doesnt transfer from game to game.
so ff vii rebirth might ask for ff vii remake save and give you bonus items based on that, but thats all.

FF7 Rebirth is the sequel to FF7 Remake Intergrade, so you should play Remake first, then Rebirth.

FF16 is not connected to either of them.

FF16 is an action game similar to Devil May Cry or God of War. FF7 Remake and Rebirth are more strategic action RPGs where you can pause the action to issue orders to your party members and select commands, kind of similar to older PC RPGs, but with more modern action combat.

So choose based on your preferred genre. Both are good.

Not a Final Fantasy but I've enjoyed the gameplay of Visions of Mana a bunch.
Get that on your radar of you want whimsical fantasy.

Well technically you dont need to play any because all games have different stories.
Thing is in every games there are a lot of references to something from previous games and when you understand it it makes games much more enjoyable.
So again while, you dont need to play any beside Remake and Rebirth i suggest you to start from 1 and play all of them.

This is true.
Rule of thumb
Money is always Gil(15 had Yen, but that was only inside Insomnia)
There is usually a character named Cid.
Games share monster designs. Malburo is a common one, that has a signature attack called Bad Breath(Named after a cigarette company).
Chocobo's and Moogles.
Spell names and Characters have jobs.

It's hard to recommend FF games to newcomers, mainly because the old games didn't age well and have bad graphics, while the new games are mostly garbage games with shiny graphics.

But I'd say FFVII Remake is an okay entry point. So get that one and then Rebirth.

If you're okay with decent 3D, not too old graphics, try Final Fantasy X. It's dirt cheap especially during sales, but that's one of the best games in the series.

Another good one is Strangers in Paradise. It's a spin-off but a very good modern FF game.

its hard to recommend a FF game to new players without knowing what type of RPG you enjoy as every FF game has its own style

also to fully invest in FF12 it would be wise to play the ivalice games as the ivalice games all take place in the game world (the FF tactics series)

this is just an opinion, no idea why everyone hates on 13 so much its not that bad (13-2 is bad though and i've never played lightning returns)

Its a shame u arent interested in 2D because FF1 is one of the best games ever made and a perfect place to start. Although I would suggest the PS1 port or the original instead of PC port.

It still holds its own as an incredible game to this day.

FF7 IS THE BEST FF GAME IN THE HISTORY SO FAR, YOU CAN GET NOTHING WRONG PLAYING IT FIRST STARTING FROM NOW, AND THATS WHY THEY MAKE A TRILOGY FOR A SINGLE GAME WITH EACH THEIR OWN SEPARATE PLAYTHROUGH

TLDR BUY REMAKE INTERGRADE AND REBIRTH TWIN PACK, THE DISCOUNT WONT BE THERE AGAIN FOR A LONG TIME, AND THE 3RD AND FINAL GAME IN THE TRILOGY IS AT LEAST 4 YEARS AWAY FROM NOW
