How to get Infected?

Was just playing a couple of rounds with a Friend until both of our Heads Suddenly Exploded out of nowhere, we both knew that it was due to the Infection but none got hurt so...

How did we got infected? Is it due to the Leeches? The Small things spawning with the Enemies that follows them around or is it pure random?

When you infected, its either the leeches, the monsters grabbing you. But its weird - its super off and on some times you get infected sometimes you dont. Your better off checking at one of the tea cup things that will just straight up tell you.

walking or driving over the tentacles on the ground also infects you (not the ones that spawn when you kill a monster, the ones that naturally spawn on the ground.)

it also possible if you have infectious mass (the bush-like things made out of the black tentacles that infect you if you walk through them (still a chance thing though)) or air-born infection enabled that you got infected like that. outside of those, yeah everything mentioned in the comments above are the only other ways of getting infected as of now.
