It's floating in the hall next the second (further away) waypoint you get from the console.
Genuinely baffles me why they would do this. On one hand, you get more stuff in one place with mediums, it's more base-space efficient, perhaps. But there's one big advantage to the small storage: you can see the entire contents from one screen; no need to scroll. It might be worth trading away that convenience if the medium storage gave you more space per power consumption, but it doesn't.
I stuck to small wall mounted storages as they are far more practical.
I'm a Hallway Storage person too :-)
I've only played for a few hours today, but I did notice that you can't put Small Storage on the ends of hallways, which meant I couldn't do my usual (Subnautica) storage solution which uses Cross+ Hallways.
Those alcoves are great for lining with storage, and you can stand in the middle and just rotate to each of the three alcoves.
Having just got to Medium storage (and realised its placement restrictions), it can be used at the end of each alcove, with Small storage either side on the walls.
in one Cross Section +
x8 Small storage, x3 Medium storage and x6 Storage box is the best I can do (using the three alcoves).
