There are some rewards that are locked behind coop play to. One involves healing a teammate with a certain weapon.

Difficulty wise, even the hardest difficulty is perfectly manageable solo. With enough upgrades it's about as difficult as moderate with no upgrades. (Which is also pretty manageable.)

Err, dumb question here but.. how the hell do you even play solo? I click ready and it just sits in searching for lobby forever.. how do I tell it to just go solo?

In the demo I just turned off my internet, but in the full game you can press R2 (or whatever the keyboard wants in the upper right of the lobby screen) then just check off fill lobby.

Press alt and a window at the top right should open up with checkboxes to modify lobby settings. The first/top checkbox should be something along the lines of "do not wait for lobby" or somesuch. Checking that will let you go directly into the game instead of trying to match you with others, aka: solo.
