How do you run or sit down?

I tried the instructions in this guide but they don't seem to work.

Does running only work in certain anomaly situations and can you only sit down when the car is full of mannequins and you're supposed to sit in the empty seat?

There are some situations where you cannot run, while sitting down always works. Just go near the seat and press Space or Ctrl.
