The counter only advances when you successfully pass an anomaly. Moving through a car with no anomaly doesn't advance the count.
Failure is pretty explicit in this game. It'll fade to black after whatever happens and you'll start back sitting on the bench. Otherwise you're moving forward. You have to successfully get past 8 anomalies to reach the end.
The game confused me at first too. I tried to play it like Exit 8 or Shinkansen 0 where you go back if you encounter an anomaly and go forward if you don't. This game is not like that!
You can only go forward in Platform 8. If there's an anomaly in a room your goal is to get past it. Sometimes there's instructions on the digital screen telling you what to do to win. Sometimes there's a sticker on the door saying not to proceed until the anomaly is gone (find it and look at it for a bit and it'll disappear). This kind with the sticker on the door are like The Exit 8, but you have to look at them to make them go away instead of going back. This kind always have the sticker on the door.
Otherwise you just need to get through the room avoiding any danger or following instructions on the digital signs.
I was confused too, but this seems to be the answer to that question
If Exit 8 was a perception check puzzle game (even there, I believe, "normal" levels shouldn't increment the exit number), this one is more of a walking simulator
