Upgrading the ship?

I already know from looking at guides that it is possible, the problem I'm having is *finding* how to do it. Supposedly we get it from events or from other settlements, however, I've been around the map and to every settlement and so far no options for upgrading the ship.

I know I'm missing something, and it's probably staring me right in the freaking face. So my question is, what am I doing wrong?

Check your soulstree, you might not have it unlocked yet if you are not to far in population. You are looking for the "Mechanic". Then you need to build them a tower and assign them. Occasionally I also save and reload the game after hours of play to refresh events

yes look at your soultree if there are commander portraits in white, those will turn up at question marks in the world.

its about halfway, and you will find a lone tower with a mechanical HQ on it, that will be your mechanic, demolish that and assign the commander somewhere with acces to workers and you will respawn with a new surveyor

You're looking for a mechanic. Place them in a tower.

It would be cool if there were further mechanics/specialists that improved the faction specific surveyors or unlocked further variants, like mk1, mk2, etc

agreed, also a faction specific starter ship perhaps
or just a few faction flourishes
