If I was making one purchase, I'd probably pick premium battlepass. But why would I pay $20 for an IAP in a silly idle game, when I can have a full game like Balatro for the same price?
It is a bit unfortunate that if you buy it later you don't get back the value from prior months, which is a bit of a strange disincentive to buy it later (again, unless you're confident you're going to play for another 2+ beyond the purchase.
This is actually super nice because it keeps giga spenders in check and for the most part the stronger players are the ones that have played for a long time and gained resources for a long time, NOT the ones that walked into the game and slammed their wallet on the table.
that being SAID spending DOES give you some big advantages, just not in gems. buy the battle pass and 2X increases. these are PERMANENT (you buy one battle pass you buy them ALL forever every month). This is how you get the big bang for you buck but it takes time.
