puzzle with ball and two pits

In the northeast corner of the map, beyond Khepri Amphitheatre, there is an area which contains one ball and two pits or wells. What is one supposed to do there?

Use the ball to get to the (health?) upgrade on the statue - as for the pits... good question - I think they may be reserved for future content/challenges although I've been meaning to try to rappel down one with the aid of a friend :D

Also, note the 1000 gem chest there - handy!

*Edit* just went back there and it strikes me that it looks like some kind of ball game with the pits as goals - there's a 'battle arena' getting unlocked on the 2nd so maybe it's a 2 vs 2 competition there?

Thanks! We didn't need the ball for the health upgrade, playing multiplayer. I'm looking forward to the battle arena...
