Stuck can't get out of shelter.

The quest says to use my companion but I can't for the life of me to figure out how to use my companion. and I need to do that to get out.

If I'm understanding you right, you now have "Blackie" (quickly renamed I hope...). Open up your Inventory screen (H key I think) and you'll see him as an icon in the lower left of your picture, mid-screen. Click on him to talk to him. You'll get an explanation for his teleportation abilities...which is what you need to leave the Shelter (and get back to it, obviously).

Also, get in the habit of right-clicking on things in your inventory. Sometimes those people will have things to say as the story progresses; sometimes you'll want to fight a battle to upgrade an item (or destroy it for crystals; preferably after it's fully upgraded); and in a few occasions (cough*My First Alchemy Set*cough) you'll want to get a free, random skill rune after every 10 fights (get your pen and notepaper to track this religiously). Etc.

Glad to hear it, enjoy the game. Just to clarify, you click on "Blackie" (cringe) and the up to 3 companions you'll gain over the course of the game to talk to them. Anything and anyone in your actual inventory, you need to r-click on.
