The Dark Side really encourages using unfamiliar units. Even some of the familiar ones have different skills. Dragons, except for Dragon Riders, are the same but not as plentiful or as necessary. My favorites in AP were Pirates in early game (loved Jimmy Kraud), Dwarves in midgame, and Demons in endgame. There are plenty of PIrates in DS but they don't fit in very well. I use whatever seems plentiful at the time. Nerbu turned me on to human traitors for midgame after Inselburg. With that Star artifact, their Morale makes them almost invincible.
