Game crashes on Intel HD graphic cards
After trying to debug the startup failure, I came to the conclusion that this game will not run on Intel HD graphic cards...

Error is:
Assert_fatal
file:C:\workdir\Src\liblgview\core\BasicOglWnd.cpp line:203 wglchoosepixelformatAKB() failed!!

Its not the intel graphics card specifically, it's a compatibility issue with the game + windows + intel graphics cards, it's that combination that has and issue. There is a work around using linex and wine, but a easier one is just playing it in a window.

Also make sure that it is patched up. There is 4 patches 1.1, 1.2, 1.21 and 1.3. The game MUST be patched up to a minimum of 1.21 to work on Windows 7 don't know if it works on Windows 8. 1.3 is and unifficial patch that was put out to fix a few things. It's found at http://www.ufo-aftershock.com/pages/support.html#patches and is listed as unoffical patch.

Intel HD is not a graphics card. There is no card.

It is called a graphics solution, or more commonly an integrated graphics solution. It's part of the CPU and at this point in time has no potential to be as powerful as an actual graphics card. They can be alright for many games though.

I played it years ago, and had difficulty getting it to run on an AMD card as well. Has anything been done to the Steam version to make it more compatible with more hardware? If not then me wasting my money on it once was enough.

Having the same problem. I used the 1.2.1 patch but it still didn't work. Any suggestions?

Did anyone that was having issues try it in window mode it fixed this issue with my laptop

If you have windows 8 it's best to stay away from this game since it was actually made back in 2006 when windows xp was hot off the shelves, however there is a patch you can download as said above to play on windows 7 with a dedicated graphis like one of the ones suggested on the patches list.

Glad I picked it up in a bundle and I have a desktop that can run it. Well as it hates my intel labtop same error as the OP. Did fancy a mobile version though, sad face...

Tried adding " --option fullscreen=FALSE " to the end of the UFO shortcut no go for me. Plus I added each subsequent patch and retried same error as OP in windowed mode too.

Added the 1.3 CP and it states now I am missing a freetype6.dll. It won't even start and crash in windowed mode anymore lol. Not tech savy so don't fancy downloading random dll off the internet.

Did the patches fix the problem for you?

UPDATE: I patched the game to Version 1.3 with the unofficial community patch.
When you patch the game the error displayed changes to "freetype6.dll not found".

UPDATE: It changed back to showing me the same old error. Great. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great. I will contact Steam Support now. They should test if a game works/runs on different systems BEFORE they start to sell it and show you if it is compatible or not...

I have had similar issues, and tried the same things. this game worked just fine for a good long time and then just suddenly "assert_fatal" ver: UFO: Aftershock v1.3 file:.\ProfileManager.cpp line:347 "Profiles/profilesnfo.txt": parse error ()

I contacted the developer, and their reply was "once the game starts up try changing your graphics settings for an older card" ... My graphics card is not an older card, infact its still on shelves being sold. Also, can't change graphics settings in the game if Game Does Not Start. Steam's idea was to reinstall, which I have done five times. So I'm really hoping you get a comprehensive answer.

UPDATE: I asked Steam Support and mailed the 1C Company publisher

Best thing: 1C lets you select one game out of their game list as an replacement. Awesome company!

I didn't try the publisher, I'll have to do that. Wonder if replacing aftershock with aftershock would work.

Wow, five minutes later I get a response. must be a slow day at the office. Apparently my issue is unusual but not unknown. I had to tell steam not to synch my files, then manually delete the profiles folder, re-enable synch. I lose my progress, but the game works now. Why is the publisher so much more helpful than customer support?

So, is this game compatible to Windows 10 pro i7 5600U , Intel HD Graphics 5500, 16Gb Ram?
