Also make sure that it is patched up. There is 4 patches 1.1, 1.2, 1.21 and 1.3. The game MUST be patched up to a minimum of 1.21 to work on Windows 7 don't know if it works on Windows 8. 1.3 is and unifficial patch that was put out to fix a few things. It's found at http://www.ufo-aftershock.com/pages/support.html#patches and is listed as unoffical patch.
It is called a graphics solution, or more commonly an integrated graphics solution. It's part of the CPU and at this point in time has no potential to be as powerful as an actual graphics card. They can be alright for many games though.
Tried adding " --option fullscreen=FALSE " to the end of the UFO shortcut no go for me. Plus I added each subsequent patch and retried same error as OP in windowed mode too.
Added the 1.3 CP and it states now I am missing a freetype6.dll. It won't even start and crash in windowed mode anymore lol. Not tech savy so don't fancy downloading random dll off the internet.
UPDATE: I patched the game to Version 1.3 with the unofficial community patch.
When you patch the game the error displayed changes to "freetype6.dll not found".
UPDATE: It changed back to showing me the same old error. Great. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great. I will contact Steam Support now. They should test if a game works/runs on different systems BEFORE they start to sell it and show you if it is compatible or not...
I have had similar issues, and tried the same things. this game worked just fine for a good long time and then just suddenly "assert_fatal" ver: UFO: Aftershock v1.3 file:.\ProfileManager.cpp line:347 "Profiles/profilesnfo.txt": parse error ()
I contacted the developer, and their reply was "once the game starts up try changing your graphics settings for an older card" ... My graphics card is not an older card, infact its still on shelves being sold. Also, can't change graphics settings in the game if Game Does Not Start. Steam's idea was to reinstall, which I have done five times. So I'm really hoping you get a comprehensive answer.
Best thing: 1C lets you select one game out of their game list as an replacement. Awesome company!
