Finally a Map!
I have finally reached the point when you start "Cartography'ing" (if you know you know).

You get your tools back after you go back to the cove with Irvin to inspect what happened.

I choose to go with the Order as my faction (seemed easier that the Freehunters) then one of the first missions is to find Irvin (his camp is close to the house that you can buy on the way to the Fisher Village). You get the typically "he's not here" quest and go find him at the Tavern near the Guard Camp, King's Brother I think.

I saw the areas on the ground as I was exploring. Thought it might be for learning spells later, but now know it is for exploring. I've done a few of the areas already, but yeah, trying to remember where they all were is a pain!

I posted a screenshot showing the locations of the region unlock locations. Might help if you wanted to use it

I'm probably a complete idiot but can't find the King's Brother tarvern. Looked around the guard tower on the other side of the fishing village as that's the closest I could think of based on the quest description but can't find a tavern at all. I also looked in the city. Could you guys give me some pointers, please?

"Guard Tower" location near the beginning of the game. If you did the order quest it's the same place where you had to pay the tab for one of the knights.

I came to the discussions just now to write your post almost word-for-word, lol! The coincidence! Thanks for doing my job for me :P I also went with the Order simply because I couldn't be arsed to run back to the Free Hunters and finish their vague Trials. A shame... I was leaning toward the Hunters...

I also wanted to add some criticism though:

1.) WHY did the devs decide to unlock "Cartagrophying" AFTER Act 1 where you had to endlessly run around in circles already? If Tristan had his tools from the start, at least endlessly searching for Order Knights and Free Hunter Trials and reaching wrong areas had SOME benefit! This baffles the mind to a point it literally infuriates me. What, you want me to run in circles AGAIN?! I basically know the map like the back of my hand now ffs.

2.) WHY AGAIN with the VAGUE descriptions?! "You can get your first vantage point right opposite of the guard tower on the hill with the ship in it" -- both the tutorial pop-up AND Irvin were exactly as vague. WHAT HILL WITH A SHIP? I'm looking all around me like the John Travolta meme from Pulp Fiction and I have no clue. Sigh.... I want to love this game, which is why I keep playing it... but it's an abbusive relationship...

Sorry for replying to myself like an idiot, but there's a 3rd critique:

3.) Just like the Cartagrophying being unlocked too late, I'm 100% certain you'll get the magical ability to unlock magical (tele)portals -- because I think that's all those rubble mounds you see at important areas, with a blue crystal sticking out of them. WHY unlock that ability so late? They want this game to be so much like Gothic, but they forgot they made the world 50 times bigger and progression 50 times slower. Ugh.

I can feel your pain man! I unlocked the map in Act 2 earlier today and my soul was immediately sapped from my body! Haha

I've unlocked a few spots on the map myself but my patience is wearing thin by the day with this game, I love exploring the depths of combat systems so games like the Nioh series, Ninja Gaiden 4 etc are my thing. Genre of game doesn't bother me as long as it has a combat system that clicks with me.

The combat in Of Ash and Steel is okay considering it's made by a smaller development team but what's not okay are other issues, bugs and design decisions. Just now I crafted a greatsword and longsword - both disappeared from the inventory after switching them out!

I bought the bundle with Tainted Grail and I really enjoyed the demo of that so I think I'll drop Of Ash and Steel for now and do a playthrough of Tainted Grail. Hopefully by that time the developers have sorted out majority of the issues and made navigation better.

I don't mind waiting to be honest but no game will keep me from Nioh 3 come February! Haha

These descriptions drive me absolutely insane as well. Morrowind's were like neon signs compared to this.
Doesn't help that a lot of things get lost in translation here i reckon...

I just got the map and I was exactly the same.. WTF 'ship in a hill' near the cove Irvin is talking about? I've been running around for the last 1 hour and nothing...

No. Instructions / Descriptions are as vague in english as they are in russian. This and no decent landmarks to understand where you are - terrible game design.

A friend found it and told me about it. Just outside the outside tavern, there's a cool fisherman right? The one who gives you a quest about the fish not biting? Then further down that road there are two other fisherman at a tree? Well it's right ABOVE them. To get there, you actually have to move all the way around opposite of what I just told you.
