Eyeing this game. Seems like if the dev could preload this patch either with the game package or under the Betas tab in the game properties as an optional update many of those complaints and bad reviews could potentialy change. Going to an external site or checking the forums isn't the reflex sadly for many gamers and most will just give up on playing and refund.

It looks like this hi-res patch also makes the combat impossibly hard. It's like my character needs an eternity to kill every enemy, even the weakest. I'm constantly dying. Now I've set the game back to the original steam version and suddenly its easy to kill all the lame critters, as its meant to be. Is this some kind of joke the patch creators included or is there a setting for this and the standard for hi-res is also a super hard mode?

Do you have update 1.1 ( http://orion-mm.ru/downloads/bz_update_1.exe )?

To ensure the patches work correctly, it is advised to install them on top of the updates.
So first install update 1.1. from http://orion-mm.ru/downloads/bz_update_1.exe
And then unpack patch 1.7 from http://orion-mm.ru/dnld.php?f=bz_win7win8_patch7.rar

Each patch includes all fixes from previous patches but NOT those from updates. However because updates and patches are not numbered separately, it is confusing.
To clarify: 1.1 is an update (you need this one), and then 1.2-1.7 are patches that go over 1.1 (you only need the latest of these).

You dont need to install any of the earlier patches, especially cause steam version was already patched up to 1.6 or something, anyway, you just replace the files.

Are you sure? Some files seem to give different hashes. And replacing Steam's borderzone.exe with bz_update_1.exe (renamed to borderzone.exe) runs as expected.

Update 1.1 is only needed for the old cd version of the game, Steam version was already updated to 1.6.
Initially it was just about making Borderzone work with modern OSes, but because we reported numerous glitches, programmer of the game tried to fix other stuff, unfortunately some of the changes broke other things, that's why it was so many patches, some stuff had to be left as it was.

Orion is not making games anymore and he got a lot of other things to do, so he had to stop with this final patch which included some previously lost textures.

Is there a specific reason why Orion no longer makes games? And is the dev that fixed Borderzone still making other games? I'm a giant fan of Borderzone and I would love to explore other games he might have released.

After financial crisis of 2008 most of russian devs had to switch from gamedev to other projects and those few who survived just went to mobile games or mmos.
You can find some other Orion games in Steam, but their best title called "Чёрная Метка"/The Hunt was only released on disks.

That's a real shame because russian developers had a certain charm to their games. A level of relatable (if you will) creativity where they would stretch the story and gameplay right on the edge of believeable, not to mention the incredible attention to detail. The fact that many of them had to switch to other things because of the financial crisis is really sad.

Did some searching, and this is the only list of Orion's video games I could find: https://www.giantbomb.com/orion-games/3010-8531/developed/

Can somebody confirm that people don't need to install Update 1.1 prior to Patch 1.7? Both claims could be true and the matter not being fully settled will cause issues for some players. Also, maybe 1.7 requires a new save file because of balancing?
I would suggest installing update 1.1 prior to patch 1.7, because even if I am incorrect that it is necessary, it certainly cannot do any harm.

Maybe link patch 1.7 rar on a mediafire site. The .ru site seems to have nothing or is blocked.

That's the thing, though, if @KomdivCCCP is right then installing an earlier patch might undo the changes unless the 1.1 installer checks the version beforehand. :|

I just installed the game (pre-patches) and here's what I'm noticing...

borderzone.exe's Properties says:
  • File version: 1.0.0.1
  • Product version: 1.0
  • Size: 1.81 MB

bz_update_1.exe says:
  • File version: 1.1.0.0
  • Product version:

bz_win7win8_patch7's borderzone.exe's Properties says:
  • File version: 1.0.0.1
  • Product version: 1.0
  • Size: 1.81 MB
  • Date modified: 4/5/2015 19:19

bz_win7win8_patch7's config.exe's Properties says:
  • File version: 1.0.0.1
  • Product version: 1.0
  • Size: 1.80 MB
  • Date modified: 8/10/2014 00:23*

*The only field that notably differs from a fresh install's file.

Now I would check borderzone.exe and config.exe from bz_update_1.exe, but even after moving the file to the game directory I get " No installation found of borderzone.exe, upgrade aborted." Anybody wanna check there's for the rest of us... and provide a solution in the thread I linked?
