Alex and Harold are dead and the Charnel House and the train are taking them to the afterlife. I looked up Charnel House and found it is where they store bones of the deceased. I am not sure how Harold died, but I'm pretty sure Alex killed herself, either on purpose or by accidental overdose. A drug problem was hinted at and Rob said he found her unconcious when he came into her apartment one time. I think the stress of the breakup and everything caused her to either commit suicide or take an overdose. I think it happened right after the phone call. I think her dad's death was the final nail in the coffin.
The train and it's compartments force the passenger to deal with unfinished conflicts in their lives. Hence Don and Floyd always being different people, each personal people to the person riding on the train. I'm not sure why Don was the same for both Harold and Alex, but Floyd was Gavin for Alex because of what happened between them. Because of how Alex was running from the truth, running from confrontation. She was forced to deal with that on the train.
Rob was there because somewhere deep in her mind, Alex knew who was behind it all. She even said it was obvious in the game when it was revealed. Rob scared and tortured her so much that he got into her head. I think this is why he had so much of a strong presence on the train.
Harold... I think he might have killed Kat. At the end of the game, he says he's "sorry." Also, I think Rob mentioned him having secrets, skeletons in his closet or something of that nature. I don't remember the exact wording. I think his ride might have been coming to terms with that in away, but I haven't really figured out much for Harold...
That's what I have for now. After I replay it, I might add more. It's just my theory.
It took me about an hour and 20 minutes to finish and I think I got the gist of it, that said I likely did miss a few things because while I explore and enjoy it in games, I've never been especially talented at it. Also I am unsure what I found since the achievements seem to be bugged, for example I know I did check on the package (playing yesterday) and the achievement didn't trigger. That said I'm not a big achievement hunter so no big deal.
THAT said I'm not 100% sold on *everyone* being dead. If that was the case the finale makes little sense given that Alex's "death" would fit the overall theme, yet the forces on the train including a certain author (who apparently had a book in the real world) in particular intervene to change her apparent death.
What's more "shock" reveals about Floyd, including the fact that he's very much alive albeit in bad shape both show more knowlege than Alex would possess (along with a "paused time" conversation which plays havoc with all of this being in her mind, or from her mind, though some things doubtlessly are), which sort of killed my theories about what was appearing in the apartment at the beginning. Basically there is no way for Alex to know about someone being a living torso trapped somewhere even if one was to argue she was able to deduce Rob was a psychopath. Likewise she would not have known about Lydia at all, and had to deduce that story, hence, not everything is a mental projection from her, although some things like the apperance of her friends apparently are being taken from her mind, however that seems to be mostly guiding her towards the final confrontation which the train wants to happen for... reasons.
The biggest piece of information I seem to have missed is the exact tie between Alex and Harold, since they are both on this train because they are connected to the destination. Alex apparently having a more closely tied origin given the picture which goes back to the beginnings of the train.
I simply figured most of the big questions would be answered in the next chapter, when it's finally released, albeit alongside a lot more questions.
I think the theme of death is present considering the girl and the victorian photos , the journey , the reference to the worms in the earth and the train being burried.
I am not sure if this is implying actual death for the characters or just an interaction with it. I recall seeing the grub in Alex's apartment during the lightining flash and that was before the call if I am not mistaken . So she either died before or it is just an overlap with the paranormal/ghost world.
Lang's story is briefly touched upon , but the remark at drinking from the barman (just one more for the road) and the fact that he is "sorry" to Kat , makes me think drunk driving killed the passenger , aka Kat. The moving bags would hint to body bags at the accident scene.
I'm curios how you will continue this story (2016? ) and how the two characters influence the "find" Kat made on the island .
Spoilers:
Well Grub is revealed to be the author of the book if I remember from the dialogue at the end when he jumps on Rob as he's about to kill Alex during the finale, when the ticket taker and the barman are talking about how this is obviously not how it was intended to go. The death metaphor is "beat you over the head" obvious, especially in Harold's story, but it seems to be a case where Grub is the driving force behind most of it, especially given that the title is "The Charnel House Trilogy" and it does seem possession of the book ties things together.
Now to be honest with you it had occured to me during the entire thing that the characters could also be drugged and receiving suggestions, but that seems against the grain of the game. I did notice that things don't start to get really wonky on the train until both characters have had a drink. Harold gets a free whisky, and Alex is left a free bloody mary. Until that point it's atmospheric but mostly just people heading to the bar car.
One theory which is quite probably NOT correct is that Gavin was the ring leader of some kind of wierd abduction/brainwashing conspiracy. This pretty much omits the entire first chapter and the things you see there which is why it's unlikely. Starting with Chapter 2 though you could sort of make a case for that and it could explain inconsistancies.
That said I simply figured it was being left open for a sequel, and that the sequel would probably pick up with Kat, and we'd likely see the connections then. Of course the creator said all the answers are actually in the game, I probably just missed them.
The playable characters in Augur Peak are Kat, Alex, Lang, Don and a new character, who is some kind of detective.
1. Alex waited for the train in her T-shirt. Under the snow! And while on the train, she refused to open the windows because she did not want to 'freeze to death'. Why did she stand on the station for quite some time freezing to death then?
2. What country the story takes place in? The first chapter is definitely New York, USA. Alex is living there, and she travels quite far to the train station, but not to another country of course. But for Harold, the train was rather British - he had pounds, not dollars in his wallet, and Floyd accepted pounds as payment without any hesitation.
So - the whole train thing seems to be unreal, not just different compartments and huge moving bags...
And as for the meaning of that story and plot theories - I would rather wait for Ashton to show us the 2016 sequel :) We are all intrigued of course, but it would be more reasonable to wait for the explanations than to make out some amateur suppositions as for who Kat is, why Lang is sorry, is Gavin still alive etc.
The numbers being 1318. First of all, it's Lang's PIN but also Alex's first voicemail is received at "one eighteen PM" which in the 24 hour clock is "13:18". I'm pretty sure I've seen The Numbers appear elsewhere but I'd need to do a proper and thorough playthough to check. What do they mean? What does it ALL mean?
They're not the only recurring numbers, either.
