I'd highly recommend testing one of those out or going to the Lemmasoft Forums[lemmasoft.renai.us], a board specifically for visual novel developers and fans. They too have a pretty good collection of free games in this vein.
It's a free game that takes place in the same world as Backstage Pass. Backstage Pass is more or less the sequel to that game. Of course, this being a commercial game, has a lot more polish and much more content, but you can still get a decent amount of playtime (more than enough to try out the genre) in the in-game time span of a month that Re:Alistair++ takes place in.
I'll also mention Narcissu. It's not interactive and a very different style from this game, but it's free and available on Steam, and it's damn good visual novel. Check it out.
However, RE: Alistair++ was my first visual novel with sakevisual and it got me hooked on the rest of their games (the only one I haven't played yet is Ripples). I would highly recommend giving RE:Alistair++ a shot if you haven't already.
I'm highly looking forward to the finished version of Backstage Pass, considering sakevisual hasn't put in all the voice acting yet, as well as a few other surprises. Those things they've done very well with in the past with their Jisei/Kansei/Yousei line (which you would have to pay to play, but if you like murder mysteries, their plot lines are rather interesting) and you can tell the strides of progress that have been made by the company best in terms of improving quality (which they started out decently with in Jisei).
Like they said ... RE: Alistar++ is good too but it's too short..
Too less events cx .. But if you wanna try free Otome Games, I think The Second Reproduction is better in my opinion. :) Idk, you can try both, if you want .. But I totally fell for TSR ! ^o^
And it's longer than RE: Alistar++, hehe ..
(And ... Most of the otome games about this price are better than free Otome Games.. In my opinion x:)
