New fungi monster?

Ok so, me and my friends were playing a casual game of Content Warning right? and one of my friends picked up this weird mushroom looking item and shortly after he started growing what looked like fungi or mushrooms on his playermodel and when i got near him his character would start lunging at me and trying to attack me. I ended up getting killed and when i was in spectator mode, it turns out that my friend that had the mushrooms on him was not dead. And the weirdest part is that nobody else in the server saw what i did accept for me. Does anybody have an explanation for what happened?

That was the "Curse of Shroom" item. It effects whoever touches the mushroom, turning them into a fungi creature. The player can still move and semi talk in that state, but if you get too close to them you'll get attacked. The infected player also now will count as a monster.

Yeah but i was the only one that saw that and the only one that got attacked so how did that happen?
