refers to green speed

Stimp tells you how far a ball will roll on a flat green when struck with the identical amount of force. On a green that stimps at 12 the ball will roll 12 feet. On a green that stimps at 9 the identical putt would roll 9 feet.

Great guys, thanks for that.

Just one thing though..... is that fixed or relative to green hardness, eg set at 12 rolls 12ft in all harnesses or only on medium hardness?

It is usually the average distance of 3 balls rolled using the stimpmeter from the same spot on a flat area of green.

Not based on green hardness, just the pace of the greens. Here is a brief USGA clip on using a stimpmeter

i understand what it is, just wondering if the distance of roll varies for hardness as it would in real golf.
in other words, does a stimp setting 10 roll same distance in the games on hard greens as it does on medium greens, eg 10ft medium / 10ft hard or does it increase with green hardness eg 10ft medium / 12 ft hard ?????

The firmness of the green does not affect the distance a putt will roll.
