Back spin
Since I am not a REAL golfer I could use some help here. I cannot figure out any rhyme or reason for back spin. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't. It makes a huge difference if you know what, if any, amount of back spin will occur. Thank you.

Yes I agree the backspin is out of control you never know when you are going to get it. I played a rd today and had 3 great shots that shouldve ended up close to the hole and they spun off the green, it didnt matter where I tried to place the shot on the green they all spun off the green. I think the backspin needs to be calmed down a bit.

i havent played real golf in a long time but if i remember correctly back spin is very hard to master only pros can repeat it consistantly.my dad has shot his local course record and he always said if he could master it he would been a pro player.so i thing maybe the devs are going for realism here, practice and repeat.

it seams to be really bad on low firmness cant get a ball to stay on the green and with a high firmness you dont get any backspin and its still just as tough to try and get the ball to not bounce off the green as well. so a couple things need to be toned down a bit I think.

Backspin in PG is a function of how hard you hit the ball. The more power used (especially over 100%) the greater the backspin on the ball. When approaching greens that slope towards you, which will magnify any backspin, the smart play is to use a lesser lofted club and to hit with less power thus reducing the backspin on the ball. As in real life it takes practice to learn.

Thanks for all the advice. I would imagine your ball lie could also effect the spin, as well as the slope of the green. My problem is that I can't tell the lie of the ball or see the green real well for slope.

Yes thank you I know all this but it still doesnt matter on low firmness settings you get nothing but backspin and its so bad that it pulls the ball off the green over 90% of the time. and thats not real at all.

Also on High firmness settings the ball bounces on the green like its concrete and you get no spin at all, so also not real, dont get me wrong I really love this game but it seems that they have the settings so out of wack that you cant score even with a perfect shot.

Actually, as far as backspin and hardness are concerned they are relatively "real" in their reactions. Remember, PG uses real world physics data to model the way the ball reacts. Also, if you are in North America you probably don't see really hard fairways and greens like you may see on traditional links style courses in the UK. When they dry out they CAN be like concrete! A firmness of 10 may be more suited to play on that type of course in dry conditions.

Again, the softer the green surface the more a ball with backspin will pull back and if you are hitting into an upslope that effect will be magnified. I just hit some shots into a green with a firmness of 2 and stimp of 10. I was also hitting into an upslope. Rather than use a club that I would have to hit near 100% to reach the green I clubbed down and hit a 60% shot. The ball hit the upslope and came back about 8 ft. Since the green sloped back towards me if I had hit a full wedge it would be quite likely the ball may have spun back off the front of the green. Conversely, if I am playing hard conditions I am much more likely to loft higher and overswing on a club. The high ball flight and increased backspin means the ball is more likely to land soft and hold or run out just a short distance.

If you are basing your opinions on what you have seen in previous golf games - DON'T! At best they were educated guesses on what should happen. Even when watching on tv you don't know exactly what a pro may have done to reduce spin on his shot if the conditions are soft. In Perfect Golf you really have to think about these things when playing. It is not a "grip it and rip it" type of golf game. It requires much more thought and finesse.

I watched a real world tutorial video on creating backspin provided by a PG developer and found that if you slightly de-loft a club in the shot meter and hit at 100% on an inside plane (draw). You can generate alot of backspin, just like real life. Well real life for good golfers haha

It's easy everything short of the hole spins and everything past the hole rarely does.

I am seeing wind making a big impact on spin.

Not on low firness settings every shot pulled off the green no matter where it landed b4 the pin after the pin.
