(I interpret circles and triangles to be residential and business areas, respectively.)
Depends on the map. Sometimes it's better to have a small circular track with the square on it and multiple trains, then have multiple other lines connecting into points on that small circle.
ditto triangles to a certain extent
But as I said, I haven't owned the game for very long, so these are my initial impressions which could be wrong of course. But that's what it seems like to me - the game difficulty entirely depends on which stations the game gives you.
Edit: Having played for another day, it seems like the distribution of stations is pretty constant: there will always be a ton of circles, fewer triangles, and perhaps as few as only 2 squares per map? So I guess the difficulty varies solely based on the squares? Let's say you get a map where you have 2 of each station type very early... this will be an easier map because there are numerous layout options. Conversely, it seems like most maps only give you one square to work with for most of the game... so those are harder maps because all the lines need to touch that solitary square somehow, or else passengers are going to have to switch lines to get there, which causes overcrowding problems earlier than usual.
Its like the game said "Oh you want to just chill and relax? well let me pour salt directly into your eyes and ♥♥♥♥ you out of any enjoyment"
Still though, I avoid endless mode as that removes challenge all together.
