There's also Project Gorgon that I have not played myself but I hear it's a bit like MO.
Other then that..hmm..there are still UO servers running that you could try?
EVE maybe? Great game.
Im wary to actually invest time in Mortal because I dont want to sub to anything anymore, if it had a buy to play option Id be fine with that, ya know?
MO died 5 days before a 3Gb update? That is odd.
The reason I play MO here and there is because I wanted a modern day UO and this is the only thing I've found in this 21st century of care bear WoW clones that has the same feel.
I wanted to make this post a resource to clear up some of the smog which lead it to become long winded so I cut it up to make it easier to navigate.
Mortal Online and Darkscape populations:
Mortal Online is not dead, there is still a large chunk of players and if anything this has motivated Star Vault the developers to kick out updates faster and many would agree since shortly after steam release, high quality updates as well. As for the future nothing is clear as it depends on if players decide to give mortal another chance after the garbage steam release. I love this game, but Star Vault has done a bad time at listening to players at a crucial time and instead mess up AND then listen to advice from a year ago which leads to low player retention.
Darkscape is dead, as in you can not play it because the servers are offline and the lights are out. No further updates, no previous versions to play. And for those who are not in the know Jagex the developers were bought out at top level by a chinese company who has cut the rate of production for updates and as a result lost a lot of their min-max populations.
Alternate Games that are ACTUALLY similar:
Face of Mankind: This game is dead. I wanted to get that out of the way right away but it is part of the genre of actual sandbox games that are not afraid of PvP. It was open world pvp, territory control, politics, and a true sandbox. Sadly the engine was too "outdated" and the developing company though crowdfunded over goal levels threw in the towel.
Wurm Online: While this game is unavailable on steam (Wurm Unlimited is but this is a poor substitute for a mortal experience) is a very very deep game sort of a mixture between Mortal Online and Unreal world. Everything is grid based to the extreme like tunneling or mining to the point of abstration. The thing to know is if you thought Mortal Online TC was slow, this game will not be for you. Building your first house 2x2 will take an hour plus as a new char and even on the non-pvp land masses it can be lost instantly. While this is open world pvp it depends on which Continent you are on, many are non-pvp some are different kind of open world pvp and contests. You can seemlessly travel to these different land masses.
Eve Online: One of the truest sandboxes and the most stable game in our beloved genre. Please note it is going pseudo-free to play in october-november. High quality graphics, high quality combat that really puts you edge of your seat, and a strong atmosphere (which is 99% of mortal in my opinion) but immersion is not high as you do not really have many connection points with your character.
If anyone wants any further information about these games feel free to contact me.
BONUS: Try unreal world, it is free on the developer website $10 on steam. One of the BEST games in the sandbox-survival genre. Is Single player and old school graphics (Since it was developed in the 80s) is still being updated today.
I know a few interesting projects, though i have a doubts that some of them will be implemented - Trials of Ascension, Relics of Annorath, Life of Rome, Chronicles of Elyria, Embers of Caerus (already cancelled). All have some interesting ideas and in some aspects similar to MO. But what i like with Mortal Online, is that devs already done very much and already make a game (not a list of promises). And despite some flaws MO absolutely playable and have a lot of unique game elements.
